Ask me anything about Cornell

When did you send in everything? if it’s been 2 weeks, I would call.

@Babygoindown, I would still contact Cornell. Don’t leave something like that up to chance.

SMRSMR and lilmelonred, Thanks for the advice! I would definitely call tomorrow.

For the college of arts and sciences, are 2 subject tests required or recommended?

Required

http://admissions.cornell.edu/sites/default/files/2013FreshmanRequirementsChart.pdf

I don’t know how many are still reading this thread but I thought this might be worth pointing out to those interested in undergraduate business school rankings:

From Bloomberg,

 1. Norte Dame (Mendoza)
 2. U.Va (McIntire)
 3. Cornell (Dyson)
 4. Wash U (Olin)
 5. Penn (Wharton)

[Best Undergraduate Business Schools 2013 - Notre Dame Takes Top Spot Once Again - Businessweek](http://images.businessweek.com/slideshows/2013-03-20/best-undergraduate-business-schools-2013)

Well, I don’t know whether you’re still answering questions but-

How good is Cornell’s engineering? Rank-wise I guess too but also in terms of grad school, level of interest of students, job prospects, interactivity of classes, labs, etc. How does it compare with other engineering schools? (if you know)

How much of cultural mixing do you see on campus? Do people of different ethnicities or races tend to stay apart or is there a bit of healthy mixing? How much do the two genders mix? (I’m guessing the 1st is a bit and the 2nd is a lot)

What are the fun things to do in Ithaca outside campus?

When you don’t want to study in your dorm, where do you go to study/do homework, etc.?

Thanks!

1: Cornell engineering is top 10, some would say one of the top 5 programs in the country. Very very good, can’t go wrong choosing Cornell.

2: Best answered by current engineering undergrad, the colleges tend to have different cultures.

3: Depends on season and your interests. There is a ton to do outdoors, but you should like snow & cold weather :-)

4: Libraries are popular for studying, obviously. Some people seem to like cafes and such, but you have to be good at shutting out the distractions.

What is the general consensus about people who go the Hotel School? Anyone know anything about the Government major?

does cornell look down on people who took 1 easy course in high school?

NO, midnightgurl! Cornell does not

Most highschools will have at least one course that is both required and very easy, so that wouldn’t make sense.

Why would I choose Cornell over, say, Duke.

Ivy League.

Better Recruiting.

Worse retention at Duke.

Superior academics and athletics.

Better alumni base.

If you let the deciding factor be because of the weather, then I’m sorry, but you’re a moron.

Why is “Ivy League” important to you?

How is Cornell better at recruiting?

Is the retention difference even signficant?

In what domains are Cornell’s academics and athletics better?

What makes you think the alumni base is better?

Is weather not important to you? Or is weather fine?

Prestigious.

More employers. Better Street placement than Duke. Fact.

Yes. More students leaving Duke. Think why.

Better faculty. Better student athletes than Duke.

Klarman and Einhorn, among others.

For college, don’t care.

Is Cornell more prestigious than Duke, or is the Ivy League more prestigious than Duke?

Can you provide evidence attesting to that? (both more employers, and higher quality employment?)

I meant, is the difference a big difference? I mean, 1st year retention at Duke is 97%. >.>

Isn’t Duke the school on the 10 US News List of best Undergraduate Teaching, as opposed to Cornell not being there at all? Can you provide any evidence of athletic superiority of Cornell over Duke in meaningful domains?

What?

But those who do care are morons? Why?

It probably adds to the prestige, but that’s just my opinion.

Don’t know how Duke’s recruiting is, but I know Cornell’s is good.

I thought they were the same anyway?

Academics: Engineering+CS by far, except biomedical engineering. Most of the STEM programs, actually. Architecture, too. Also, more esoteric programs like Hotel, I guess. Athletics: Hockey, if you care about that.

I can’t really speak on this one, since I don’t know much about it.

The weather really is not a big deal. I’ve never experienced snow before outside of occasional ski trips and the like, but it’s really nothing to worry about. Just put on a jacket, which takes less than 5 seconds (make sure you buy a good jacket, though). I prefer the cold to the heat because cold can be easily dealt with. Plus, you can take the bus (which I do very often) if you don’t want to walk. The cold weather generally lasts for half of November, December, January, February, and most of March. December + January is not even a full month because of the long winter vacation, and February is short, so this is really more like 3 months; the rest of the time, it’s really nice. I hear June-July can be unpleasantly warm/humid sometimes, but that’s only a concern if you plan to spend a summer in Ithaca.

Zenic beat me to it. Well put.

I would if I had cared enough/had the time. Dig the internet.

97% isn’t consistent.

What’s the criteria for these rankings? They sound biased.

They’re alumni names. If you don’t know them I assume you’re not going for Finance.

Why? Would you turn down Harvard because of the snow? No? Point made. Yes? Then you’re a moron. We both get snow. Being from the east coast, I’m used to it. Boston weather not that drastically different from Ithaca. Man up or go to that nice state school down the street close to home.

Or to, like, Duke. :/
