Ask Me Anything

Hello Duke,

I was wondering if you knew about how Penn State handles students who defer. I’ve been accepted, and I plan on attending in the fall next year. There is a chance, though, I may want to defer for a year from university to pursue my sport.

If I am to accept now, am I still able to defer for a year as long as I do so before May 1st? If so, are the only fees I still owe the $300 deposit I got with my acceptance letter?

@julia21: Everyone gets their email or postcard or whatever (how sad that I already forget) on different days, so don’t fret. If it’s really bothering you, I’d call Admissions and ask them the general timeframe of when they’ll be sending them out.

@faa5115: While I can’t exactly confirm the rumor you heard, with the large number of applications they receive, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear it be true. It just makes sense. It sucks, but you just gotta play the waiting game at this point. My best advice is to just not think about it at all, focus on other stuff. Worrying about the decision won’t make them mail it any faster.

@Wrestler203: See my response to julia21’s question. And yes that’s when you’d handle all that.

@vanburen: I think finance is a program you have to apply to get into after sophomore year (gotta get a certain GPA, yadda yadda yadda). Smeal is just the college that the finance program is in.

@eogoalie42: Hmm that’s definitely an interesting situation, one that I don’t know how they handle. Definitely call Admissions.

Hope that helped everyone! Don’t hesitate to ask more questions if my answer didn’t suffice.

Hi Duke,

I just submitted my application today, cause I’d totally forgotten that Penn State has rolling admissions. It’s not too late right??? hopefully… -__-
And I think I applied to Smeal, fyi.

Thanks!

Hi could someone please help me? How likely do you think it would be for me to be accepted to UP or even my alternate branch?

GPA-3.5 unweighted, 4.15 weighted
SAT-2000
EC’s-good couple of clubs, ukulele, work experience, volunteer hours, published author
rigor-basically the hardest I possibly could have taken (2 nonhonors classes junior year, but everything else honors and AP)

I applied late because I was just thinking of it as a safety, but now I really want to go and it’s my #1. I submitted my app on Dec 9 and my SATs got there on Dec 20, but they’re on break now and not updating statuses.

I applied to UP as an engineering major, but I’ll change to Undecided if it’ll help. Oh and I’m white and female. If I got into Rutgers even though they got my payment 3 weeks late (not my fault, my counselor didn’t send out my fee waiver when I asked her back in November), does that mean I should be pretty safe for PSU? thanks =/

@bigeast24881: Sorry, I don’t know when they stop looking at applications. Crossing my fingers for you.

@christinek725: You have a good chance of getting accepted, barring the application deadline (that I don’t know). Your stats are similar to mine when I was accepted, but being a female engineer will probably help you even more. Good luck!

Thanks Duke, that gave me a little bit of hope. =] I have one more question though-At this point, would it be impossible to get into Smeal? I don’t know why I chose engineering, I’ve just been interested in it lately, but business is what I really want to do. For the past 4 years, I’ve even been in my school’s specialized business program (only 26 people accepted in my grade). I know, I really messed up this application. =/

I hope my PM response helped, christinek725

First, I just want to say that you’re totally awesome for answering all of these questions!
My question is do you think Penn state is worth the tuition. I dont know if you’re in state or out of state, but I live in NY and the oos tuition is pretty steep. Do you think you’re getting a good education for the money that you’re paying, and do you think you have a good chance of getting a job after graduation? Financial issues are the only thing that is holding me back right now, and it sucks lol.

I’m in a different position than you, being an in-state student, so the tuition isn’t that much of a factor for me. I’ll split your questions into two parts though:

-Do I think I’m getting a good enough education for the money?
I’m not gonna sit here and tell you that every class at Penn State is perfect and what you read about large classes is all false. No college is perfect; I have friends from Harvard, Cornell, and other “top-tier” schools who complain about their professors too. Begin such a large school, Penn State is forced to use graduate assistants and large lecture halls to teach students. As much as they can suck, it’s really up to the student to take the initiative if they’re struggling with the atmosphere. I’ve also had some fantastic professors that actually cared about my academic progress. Two of my professors last semester responded to emails at very late hours as well as extremely quickly.

And I’m sure there are people who feel the exact opposite of me at Penn State, and hopefully they transfer somewhere where they’re happier. It’s kinda hard to explain without being through my academic career yet (any former students want to chime in?), but in my opinion, the education I have already received, as well as the education I will receive in the future, has been well worth the cost.

-Do I think I have a good change of getting a job after graduation?
Yes definitely, and not just because I’m a mathy major. Penn State, as I’m sure many people have seen/heard both here and from Penn State itself, was ranked #1 by the WSJ by corporate recruiters. There’s also a giant database for externships with former Penn Staters, resources to help land internships, an entire career services center ([Penn State Career Services](Career Services | Penn State Student Affairs)), etc. Being such a big school with a good reputation, I don’t think I’ll have any problems getting a job (hopefully).

Hope that helps! Feel free to keep asking questions if you have any.

Thanks for answering!
I’ve heard from a lot of different people and sources that Penn State was ranked really high in job recruitment, and of course it’s always a plus to have all of the alumni and networking opportunities. I don’t mind paying so much money if I know that I’m getting a good education, and am going to get a good job to pay off all of my loans. It’s just going to be a tough decision for me!

Good luck with your decision!

Hello, how competitive is the OOS transfer rate? And I am interesting in attending Smeal Business School, do I have to apply twice? as in to the campus and the business school.

Thanks.

I’m pretty sure they vary by college. And no I don’t think you need to apply twice, though if you will be a junior you might have to apply into a specific program in Smeal. It all depends.

I’d look here for info: [Penn State Undergraduate Admissions](http://admissions.psu.edu/academics/majors/requirements/transfer/)

When did PSU students get off for winter break and when do you guys go back?

I got accepted into the engineering college a couple of weeks ago and was wondering how they notify you about scholarships? Do they send another letter or would the information have been in the initial acceptance letter? I am an out-of-state student if that makes a difference…

gpa: 95
SAT 1850
ACT 29

@Pens1394: Here’s the academic calendars for the near future: [Academic Calendar](<a href=“404 Page Not Found | Penn State Office of the University Registrar”>404 Page Not Found | Penn State Office of the University Registrar)

Our finals lasted until the 16th (or earlier if you were lucky and didn’t have a Friday final), and we’ll go back January 9th. But they vary by year obviously.

@redsox2323: I’d check your Bursar on eLion (if you’re expecting one). If not, you’ll probably be notified via email (or maybe mail, probably so if it’s smaller, don’t know though). I’d shoot the Bursar’s Office or the CoE an email if you’re expecting one but don’t get it.

Hi,
I’m hoping to be admitted into Penn State Lehigh Valley in Fall 2012. I want to eventually get into Smeal, so would u advise me to apply for Lehigh Valley first and get my associates degree before transferring to Smeal? Would my chances of being accepted into Smeal higher if I transfer from Lehigh Valley compared to transferring from a local CC? What should I do? And how much is the tuition for Penn State(non-instate)?

Need Help, THANKS!

First off, unless you plan on getting your Associates in Business Administration (which you might be, Idk) ([Penn State Lehigh Valley: Associate Degrees](http://www.lv.psu.edu/Academics/assoc.htm), the only businessy one), you won’t be leaving LV with an AD. You’d be starting your degree at LV, but completing it at UP.

Secondly, you should look at the transfer requirements for both Penn State and Smeal here just to make sure you’re doing what you need to get in in the future: [Penn State Undergraduate Admissions](http://admissions.psu.edu/academics/majors/requirements/transfer/)

Finally, I doubt Penn State would come out and say “we have less stringent admission guidelines for branch campus students,” but I wouldn’t necessarily be surprised if it was that way. Frankly, I’d do what cheaper/easier/more efficient for you. Just make sure, if you do choose your local CC, that all your credits transfer.

Can I apply for Penn State AD program if I have not taken SAT? Is AD program in Penn State 2 years? After my AD, can I transfer to Smeal to finish my bachelor’s degree? And will I be considered as a sophomore or a junior?

Thanks alot!

Unless you’ve taken the ACT, I doubt it. Yes it is two years, but I don’t think you can use your Associates to work towards a bachelor, unless the courses match up right.
