Ask Me Anything

Hey thanks, and no, I am not a partier type. I am just looking at about any option I have of getting out of my supplemental room in east, as far away from the party district as I feel necessary.

@moonrise5: I’ve never heard of RA supplementals, kinda awkward if you ask me but they’re pretty desperate to fit people in a limited amount of space. A supplemental will probably suck either way, it’ll just vary in the degree of suckiness. Good luck in trying to get out.

@cel589: I know my building in Pollock had a mini kitchen on the ground floor (at least I think), I’m not sure if there was an oven there or not. Sorry.

@thrill4rishabh: The building is co-ed by floor.

What do you mean co-ed by floor? Is it like one boy floor then one girl floor?

I thought they meant one floor boy/one floor girl, but my daughter says she is finding out that there are boys on her floor. The girls have the low number rooms and the boys have the high number rooms. So, it looks like the floor is divided - one half girls, one half boys. At least on her floor.

Different buildings have different gender placements, or whatever you want to call them. I know certain buildings in East are experimenting with co-ed floors (as Kvillemom said), but I’m pretty sure the ones in Pollock are staying co-ed by floor, which is exactly what you thought it was.

I believe Bigler, Pinchot, and Sproul on East campus are the dorms that are coed ON each floor. This was new last year-

I lived in Beaver Hall back in the mid-late 90’s, and my floors had men and women on each floor. Can’t remember room numbers, but the elevator/lobby area that divides each floor is off-center, and the shorter side of the building (with one set of showers and laundry) was women and the longer side of the building (with another set of showers and laundry) was men. The RA is placed right in the middle.

I forgot to mention that my D is in Beaver-Pollock, not in East. That’s the only reason I answered the question.

Question, I got a brita water filter for my dorm room fridge. However it’s pretty big… I was wondering if people have been able to fit them in their dorm refrigerators? I know there’s a few shelves in the fridge but if those can be moved it should be able to fit…?

Yes! I have managed to get out of east supplemental and am now in a small double in Pollock-Shunk. Does anyone know about floor space in a Pollock small double? Like what to bring/not bring. Are the closets the same as in other dorms? Any other helpful hints about a smaller room, etc. I am not really bothered about having a small room, anything is better than a supplemental in east and I do not bring large stuff like tv’s and whatever big stuff people bring.

Yay! A housing victory!!

My D ordered her books online from the BN bookstore. She got an email that everything she ordered was out of stock. Is this because she ordered them too early? Has this happened to anyone else?

Also, will they deliver them to her dorm or does she need to pick them up at the bookstore? If she has to pick them up, does she do that on the day she moves in?

I got that message too for one of my books, but I assumed it was because it was a class of 500 so they might not have enough. It can’t be too soon, there isn’t even a month left of school.

Duke will know better than me, but many students don’t buy their books until they’ve actually been to class, because it’s not uncommon for the professors to say “oh, you don’t need that one” even though it’s on the list. It is very early for buying books, so that’s probably why they aren’t in stock.

They’ll hold them at the bookstore for pickup. She can get them after she moves in, nobody will expect her to have physical possession of the book on the first day of class.

Thanks, Greenbutton and Edawns. I just thought that was an easy thing to get out of the way. I was trying to get her to get her order in early to avoid having to buy new books. When I was in school, the used books always went first. She can return any books not needed, correct?

Used books always go first, and returns are easy and painless for the first few weeks of school.

@cel589: I had one in my fridge freshman year and it fit no problem.

@Kvillemom: Greenbutton and cosmicfish have it right. One thing about returning books though: Keep the receipt and remember to check the last day they’ll accept it. That can be a doozy if it’s past that date.

how competitive are premeds there and is there a significant amount of people of indian descent?

How do I get the leftover money from paying my tuition with my financial aid?

@SwaggedOut: Do you mean the program or the people in it? I only know of one person who is pre-med and she was pretty academically nuts, but I’m sure there are plenty of people who are really cool, too. Try looking here for more info ([FAQs in Premedicine — Eberly College of Science](http://science.psu.edu/premed/faqs)), or find an advisor and email them some questions, they could remember you in the future.

@TheLibero: I’m not sure what you mean by “leftover money.” Try calling the Bursar’s Office.
