@CalCNR2017 I have a thread dedicated to this question on the Davis thread homepage. Since this is interesting, why not copy your post over there?
My son just committed to Berkeley. Housing application is required May 2nd. What’s the best way to look for a roommate? Just post in the Facebook thread? Do many people use roomsurf or some other app?
Your suggestions are appreciated.
Wondering how possible it is to double major in unrelated majors in letters and science? Say, bio and econ?
Hi!
I was recently accepted into Berkeley, but I’m a little scared to choose it because I have heard so much rumors about low GPAs, hard classes, and Berkeley students being very stressed out and unhappy.
I’m planning on majoring in bio to hopefully go to vet-school. I would get in-state tuition at Berkeley and Regents, and my other choice is Rice University(60k/year).
Money is not that big of an issue for my family, but I’m not sure if Rice is worth the extra money.
If anyone is willing to offer me some insight, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@ag0925 D is a freshman STEM major (currently in L&S, will apply to transfer into CNR after next year). Public HS - not at the top of the food chain, but solid. First semester - 3.76 gpa (1 B) - on track to 4.0 second semester (fingers crossed). She works hard but has done more social things than she ever did in high school. Yes, stressed sometimes, but not unhappy. This is big boy/big girl school, not a place to park oneself for 4 years while deciding on the next move, so yes, some kids who had a relatively easy time in HS (and who did not build the necessary study skills) will find Cal to be a bit of an *sskicker.
If you are looking at vet school, yes, gpa does matter. UC Davis vet school, for example, average gpa (science) of admittees is a 3.6-3.7. Don’t know where you are thinking to apply to, but I would imagine that similar caliber schools would be around that. That may be a deciding factor for where you go for undergrad.
That being said, you have the golden ticket with in-state and Regents (priority registration, guaranteed housing for 4 years, advisors, etc.). The $100K COA gap over 4 years between Cal and Rice (probably higher, if you are Regents) is A LOT of $$. Just because you have the $$, it doesn’t mean you have to spend the $$.
Can anyone please give their opinion on the Fall Program for Freshmen?
this may seem obvious but im paranoid—can you get rescinded from Cal for low AP exam scores in senior year? just wondering since they “require” you to report all scores 3 or above
When you send in the SIR, and it doesnt ask you for a deposit, did something go wrong or is it normal? Did my financial aid cover it or something?
is there a group chat for admitted students?
I submitted my SIR to UC Berkeley on April 22 and was unaware that my next step should have been to fill out the SLR. Just recently, I logged into my portal, realized that it was overdue and promptly submitted it (11 days late). I am very concerned because the portal says that a failure to submit the SLR by the deadline will result in $14,000 extra in tuition per semester.
“If you do not submit the SLR by the deadline, you will be considered a nonresident and charges over $14000 for additional nonresident fees per semester”
My family and I have been California residents for our entire lives (I live 20 min drive away from the campus!) and are relying on in-state tuition to pay for my college education. We would be unable to afford $14,000 extra per semester. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Is there anything I can do? Please tell me that there’s some hope!
I apologize for sounding panicked but I am sincerely terrified that I will unable to go to college next year because I failed to meet this one deadline. Thank you so much for your help!
@ElyStuart10 Try to contact the Berkeley Office of Undergraduate Admissions ASAP.

I have an ACT score of 23 and a SAT score of 1600 , GPA:3.8 is it possible for me to get accepted?
@Hcrayert I’m guessing that your SAT is on the old 2400 scale.
Those numbers are low for Cal, but your GPA looks similar to mine (3.83) and I was still accepted to the engineering school. I wouldn’t count on it but it could very well happen.
I’m hoping to double major in BioE and EECS, how practical is this to do in 4 years?
@ElyStuart10 I hope you called Admissions and explained by now, but it shouldn’t be that big of a deal. They uploaded my SLR task to CalCentral AFTER the due date so mine was late and I called the Office of Residency and they said it wasn’t a big deal. But do call to let them know.
About classes that have a discussion section and a lecture section, and let’s say the course is 3 credits - do you get 3 credits per section (total: 6) or only 3 total?
@psychopathycathy It’s 3 credits total. The discussion section is considered an integral part of the course.
So I passed the ELWR test so I don’t have to take the accelerated courses. I’m trying to pick a course for the first half of R&C in Letters and Scoence. I was thinking English R1A, ComLitR1A, or RhetorR1A. I read on another thread that theses are hard ones but I don’t really want to take a weird course like African or Italian Literature. By the way, I wanted to take Roots of Western Civilizarion for the second half. Any suggestions?
@Swiper902 Nope my SAT score is on the new scale 1600 is the maximum you can get.
I have some questions regarding research opportunities at UC Berkeley. How common is it for students to get a RAship in the 1st or 2nd year itself? Furthermore, are the students participating in research able to publish in international conferences over the course of their RAship? The above questions are concerned with the undergrad EECS program of UC Berkeley, if that matters.
