@Nhatrang My parents went freshman year and dragged me to the homecoming game. They got me groceries from costco too. Stayed in the Berkeley guest house at the Lawrence lab which is cheap, but no one under 18 is allowed in and they check your id for government security. If you’re going to come up, it’s as good a time as any.
Thanks guys
@Walter924 I never thought to stay at the Berkeley guest house at Lawrence lab. Do you happen to know the Head-Gordons? Not sure if Teresa is still at the lab…
Oh and I would love to drag the kid to the homecoming game!
She is looking to do IM soccer tooe. Do you happen to know the link to sign up? ( I am never good at googling lol)
What are your thoughts about a student having enough time for a part time job?
@kahuna77
I work at Caldining 20 hours a week. If you can work 3-4 shifts, we’ll hire you. Our interview consists of why do you want to work for Caldining, how busy are you and will you be able to balance school and work.
I know people who also have work study jobs at the library or in research labs. People work at Starbucks and Peets coffee.
It’s completely doable. Gives you some forced friends (you know, sort of like Greek life), something to put on your resume, make some money.
On the emotional heath spectrum, I’d say a part time job moves you towards happy and relaxed rather than stressed.
Also, makes you use your time more effectively.
@Walter924 , Thanks. I think you make a good point about the forced friends.
How’s the new global studies major, and what is it actually about? Is it also a popular major?
The major is actually a consolidation of PACS (Peace and Conflict Studies) and other disciplines into this new major. PACS itself was pretty popular, I think around 800 declared a couple of years ago.
@hopefulcalbear
I took PACs/Global 100 and it was cool because we got to negotiate crises in Sri Lanka and Guatemala, like we all played a part and tried to come to an agreement while keeping our character’s interests in mind. The readings were interesting too. We had a cosmopolitanism unit and read a lot of stuff about areas in India or war torn regions that maintained peace even when everywhere near them was in conflict and what about that specific place kept the peace. Mostly it had to do with high amounts of interaction between the two groups before the conflict started, but there was also other stuff. The class had an interesting perspective and niche but I pass no passed it because it was evaluated by on demand essays for the midterm and final and although I knew the material well, I’m a pretty bad writer and didn’t understand at all what points to hit to get a good grade. So, if you’re interested in the major, make sure you’re a good writer and that you don’t mind on demands.
Sounds amazing! I’m not too much into policy work but would like to get into international business & culture. Would global studies be fit for that, or is it more leaning toward a polisci major but on a global scale?
@hopefulcalbear It seemed like a lot of PACs majors at least were working for nonprofits. I’ll see if I can find some more global studies majors.
Thanks for all your help! Also, what would be a good major/majors for someone interested in Product Design?
IDK
Industrial engineering?
Straight mechanical/electrical/bio engineering?
Double major in Art?
Does anyone know when the housing assignment coming out?
@Nhatrang my guess is that housing assignments will come out sometime next week. This week is Finals and everyone will move out by this weekend, so Housing probably will be busy with that this week.
Don’t forget. Housing offers are sent to your BERKELEY EMAIL address so figure out what that is.
You have a week or two before it disappears. If you mess up, you can add yourself to the waitlist and they will give you a second chance in June/July.
Thanks @Walter924 I didn’t know this, i don’t think my D knows either. I’ll let her know to check the Berkeley email address, i hope she has it.
@Nhatrang Parents Weekend for freshman year is probably worth trying to attend. It’s a great opportunity to:
- attend the homecoming game (even if you aren't a big football fan, it's exciting to sit in the stands and catch a little school spirit)
- go on the various campus tours (hit the stuff you didn't if you toured before - there is sooo much)
- have your kid show you their classes (so you get a sense of how much WALKING he/she has to do to get from one end of the campus to the other)
- have your kid show you their room (so you get a sense of how messy he/she or the roommates are and if you see anything they might need that they don't even know they might need)
- bring your kid some supplies, i.e. snacks (these will never not be welcome)
- walk around the area immediately around the campus (when your kid tells you he/she ate at such-and-such, you'll be able to picture it a bit in your mind)
We’ve gone the other two years (D is finishing up junior year), but the homecoming games were mostly driving those decisions. Cannot recommend where to stay as we are only 1 hour drive away.
What is the best freshman dorm social wise? Which is the best in terms of build quality?
@nigeluno
Clark Kerr is Greek life and sports type of social. If those aren’t your crowd then it’s not your type of social though. Plus it’s smaller so you get to know people better. Has big rooms.
Blackwell is new. No radiators. No mice. Working elevators maybe.
