Ask questions about Duke/transferring/transitioning/college life here!

Hello prospective Blue Devils!

I successfully transferred to Duke and am currently in my sophomore year. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about Duke/transferring/transitioning/college life. Best of luck to those applying!

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Anyone is free to ask or answer questions in this thread.

I wonder whether Duke undergraduates are hard on their TAs… might reconsider attending grad school next fall if I am shut out of Ivies and Ivy-equivalents this year.

When did you hear back regarding your admission?

Do decisions come out May 8th?

@Catria In my experience, Duke students have great relationships with TAs.
@sb4732a I got an email telling me that transfer applicants could log in for their decision on May 8th at 10:00 AM.
@Sumukh Yes, although the date may change this year and any year hereafter.

Is Duke conservative? I feel like my current school(Penn) is too liberal and I don’t like the political atmosphere here. Also, does Duke have any special programs that help transfers students adjust to Duke?

@Melody2015 Duke has its fair share of conservatives, but they are not very vocal and are most limited to Duke College Republicans in terms of presence. For the most part, Duke’s atmosphere is very liberal, but most students are open to new opinions and understandings as long as they are well-supported. Duke students are among the most active in their support for causes, so you will very likely see demonstrations either on East or West campus in favor of some liberal cause or another.

In terms of special programs, I would say it is mostly limited to the TAC (Transfer Advisory Committee) and those events are limited solely to the first week of classes. I would say that most individuals students and faculty are open to meeting transfers, but Duke is very, very clique-y and I was pretty disillusioned by the exclusive nature of the school at first. However, I joined some clubs that I love and found some people that I am now close with. Feel free to PM me if you’d like, I have much more to say on both subjects if you’re interested.

What’s your stats as a transfer @TheKingLives?

Thank you very much for your time. I indeed have many questions. I am class of 2019 . It has been a tough year for me experiencing most up and down in my life. I was straight rejected by Duke with ACT 35 on my first round of college application. It is exhausted and frustrated. It always has graduated school if we want to but I still want try one more time (transfer) and have no regrets in my life. Would u please offer any tips that what else need to be prepared in order to increase the chance of accepted by traferred members of committee at Duke. For examples, any extra classes might need to take in my freshman year or do I still need recommendation letter from my high school teachers? Were they main focus on freshman year or still on high school (special last part on senior year)? what activates I should join in my freshman,…??Again , I thank you very much .

Look, my hat goes off to you for your loyalty to Duke. I think that says a lot about you and your commitment to the University but the reality is that transfer admission is extraordinarily difficult and in particular, more difficult than freshman admission. My suggestion to you is to love the school you’re enrolling at in the fall and if you by any chance, find something that this school is not fulfilling that coincidentally Duke is fulfilling then go ahead and apply to transfer.

On top of stellar first year grades in rigorous courses, your case would be more compelling for the above reason. Thats truly the only way non-athlete transfer candidates get in.

Cheers and best wishes your way!
