S rents an apartment off campus with two roommates. He and Roomy#2 are well suited to each others’ living habits. The two aren’t happy with the third roommate. Roomy#3 has basically dropped out of college, not going to school last semester or this semester. He’s an okay enough guy, but has different ways than S and Roomy#2.

Their lease will be up soon. S and Roomy#3 don’t want to spend another year with roommate #3. They want to get a place without taking Roomy#3 with them. How do they approach the subject?

I don’t know the right approach, but I suggest letting him know sooner rather than later, so he can make other plans.
They probably want to try and make it “not personal,” but it clearly is, so that may be hard. Good luck

Agree that sooner is better than later. Perhaps that they want to share a one bedroom and the lease only allows two people or something. Good luck on this! Who knows how longer the 3rd guy will even want to stick around campus, if he’s dropped out anyway.

Are they friends or just friendly roommates? I’d think they could be pretty straightforward if it’s the latter…and they’re not overly concerned with a future friendship being harmed.

No good way, I’m afraid. It’s gonna hurt. But that’s the way it goes. Maybe say that a 2 roommate situation has come up that they want, so they don’t want to continue staying there. A bit easier than kicking him out, at least. Reminds me of the old “50 Ways”

meow, I said about the same thing to my son, these are not hard choice, just inevitable ones, I love how you said that. S and Roomy#2 are friends and more of just friendly roommates with Rommy#3.

"Listen, Three, I just wanted to let you know as early as possible, but Two and I have decided that we want to get a 2 bedroom apartment together next year. It’s not personal, and we don’t want you to take this the wrong way - we think your a good guy, it’s just that our living habits are not really compatible with yours and rather than impose on you and ask you to change how you live, we thought that it would be better to separate and live in different places. "
