Asking for a promotion at work

I know this isn’t really the right forum…but I wanted in on some of the parents’ wisdom.

I’ll try to make this short.

I work as a boxboy at a supermarket based in So. Cal, Stater Brothers. http://www.staterbros.com

I’m moving away to college soon, and across the street from my college are two other supermarkets, Albertsons and Ralphs. The closest Stater Bros market is 15 mins away. I currently make $6.95/hr. I’d rather stay with my company, but that is a long distance to travel for such little money; or I could go to one of our competitors and make the same.

Is this a valid reason to ask for a promotion to a higher paid position, such as a checker? I’m really offering nothing locally as I’m moving, but perhaps my willingness to stay loyal will be reason enough. This is my reasoning anyway… anybody see it? Please help me out.

Why don’t you approach all 3 companies and see who offers you the best deal, not only in terms of pay but also hours, flexible scheduling and other working conditions? I agree, 15 min. additional to commute to Stater may not be worth it unless they promote you, especially if that commute is by car.

Is there a union involved with either your employer or the competitors? I know that many supermarkets in SoCal are unionized. If so, what does the union contract say? The contract may spell out the terms (seniority, time of service, etc.) under which you can qualify for promotion.
