Asking for recs from professors

I graduated in '08, and I finally made the decision to apply to grad school seriously and to go back and visit some professors. I sent out some emails to them to let them know I’m coming. Not sure if they remember me. I hope so. At least one email reply was in depth and it at least sounded like they were sincere.

I’m probably going to talk to them about different emphases for my major and I have an idea of maybe what I want to study, but I want to make sure it’s a good thing for my major and what not. Maybe get an idea of what certain schools are particularly strong in for my field (like I know the top schools for my field, but what are they known for in my field?).

I’ll ask if they can do recs for me, but that’s more of a follow up via e-mail and stuff since almost everything’s electronic right? Should I drop anything off? Resume? I dunno? Otherwise it just seems like a casual chat to me and asking for recs in the end.

Need some help I guess. Thanks!

If you have a draft of your SOP, give it to them so they can get a better idea of what you want. Your c.v., list of schools, even an unofficial copy of your transcript would also be helpful. And go ahead and ask them to write recommendations in person. That’s probably what they are expecting.
