Asking Harvard to Match an Unconventional Offer

Hey there,

I’m one of the lucky and grateful people to have to decide between Harvard and Princeton. I have received incredibly generous financial aid packages from both universities, both of which put my expected parent contribution at 0. However, as a public high school graduate in New Jersey, I’ve been awarded the William H. Cane scholarship (see: http://www.princeton.edu/pr/aid/pdf/1112/RNCane1st.pdf</a>) from Princeton, which removes my work-study and summer earnings expectations.

I am very thankful to Harvard for their generous financial aid package, and I do not want to come across as ungrateful by asking for a review–but would Harvard consider such a thing, considering the scholarship is not based on my need but rather on my geography/schooling? A few thousand won’t make my decision, but it would be nice to have everything be equal.

I doubt Harvard would match your NJ offer- they want you to contribute via summer earnings, and work-study. If you do not want to contribute and put youir “skin” in the game, choose Princeton.

Wow, I wish I was in your position. I hope you appreciate how lucky you truly are.

Apply for other outsdie scholarships if you have time. Local ones usually have later due dates. These can be used to reduce your contribution and earnings requirement.
