The bigger problem is that if you progress to the second and third quarters without thoroughly understanding what you were supposed to have learned during the first quarter, it’s likely you will do even worse, not better.

SadCollegeGirl: I would leave the teacher alone for now since you got no answer and it seems the teacher will stick to the curve/what you were able to accomplish in the first class. I would recommend you talk to a counselor/advisor at your school to at least get it in the records that you had the scare with your mom’s health fall, plus your ADD. Are you getting accommodations for the ADD? If not, with documentation and a visit to the office that works with students with disabilities at your college, that should help in the future and/or if you are already registered with them, maybe they can help you get into a study group/with a tutor for future chem classes, too. And…last but not least…is the talking to the parents re: needing to repeat. I agree that you shouldn’t quit after just one quarter. Were your other classes okay? Hopefully they were. If so, that’s a good sign and a pat on the back for hanging in there, not quitting, while life was tough this quarter. Good luck… hang in there. Seek help from various on-campus resources…

I don’t undestand why this would cat you an extra 12k

You said yourself you only failed the first part of the term - you would’ve had to pay for the others anyway if you had passed right? Or you somehow paid or all the quarters/terms up front?

SadCollegeGirl: hope you were able to get an appointment to see a counselor, and I hope it went well. I agree with SwatTeam2010, too: is it really that much for summer classes? Sounds very expensive. Maybe you can find a substitute at a local college. For example, my daughter is taking a class at a local university through independent study and petitioned first to have it accepted at her LAC. That might be something to explore, too. Again, good luck to you.

So, stupid question, but is retaking it an option? I know at my school, if you get a D or an F you can retake a class for a new grade. If you were to repeat the class next quarter and do better, in theory you’d be okay to move onto the rest of the classes during normal terms. Since it seems like a foundation sort of class, this could also help you in the other classes you need to take.

You could also try contacting the professor for the next class in the series, explain the situation, and see if you can get an override on the pre-reqs. But if you’re shaky enough on the material to have gotten a D, I wouldn’t think you’d do too well in the next class without some major studying. :x

As for a grade change… seriously doubt it’d happen. If you earned a D, you get a D… without a more compelling reason, there’s not much you can do.

Summer session: That’s too expensive… pretty sure you calculated it wrong. Keep in mind summer session is usually priced differently, and tends to be per class, not a quarterly tuition. I’m also not sure why you’d need to take 3 quarters of summer when you only mentioned 2 classes you cannot take.

failure622, the retaking option is a good one for OP to check out. Just be careful in terms of if transferring. For example, some colleges allow the “D” to get repeated and then second grade counts. However, if transferring to a new institution, that school may accept ‘first passing grade’ and while a ‘D’ is low, it still isn’t an ‘F’ and so the newer, better grade may not count and the original ‘D’ might be what transfers in. Thus, it is a good option to explore, but think about future plans while contemplating it, too. And I agree with your thoughts re: summer session. :)

Are you sure it’d cost 7-12k? Is that because you’d have to take it at your school and pay to room there?

See if you can take it at your local community college or a local university. Organic chemistry is a pretty standard subject, so I’d expect you could probably transfer the credit. I took a course at my university over the summer and it cost $1367. That’s a lot cheaper than 7k, and also, I’m sure a community college would have been even cheaper.

My advice would be not to contact the professor again. You got what you earned, and now you can only move forward. It’s a tough thing, but it’s a good lesson to learn early in your college career rather than later. Browse the web for some study tips (I recommend the ones by Cal Newport) and try your best to improve.

Go at it with a I’m-gonna-improve attitude and go and kick next quarter’s butt!!

My college only accepts Orgo from my university… We don’t even take Harvard OC and most people who transfer into my school need to retake any sciences.
