@usma87 - looks like we will be able to directly transfer the Cal II/III Classes since DS20 took it as dual enrollment and got college credit from a local 4-year university. FYI here is the link:
@NJEngineerDad - I have another question for both you and USMA87: how many AP credits for social science classes (e.g., APWH, APUSH, etc.) can engineering students use toward general ed requirements? I understand Barrett has separate requirement. Thanks!
Visiting Tempe in two weeks. DS20 is very excited.
@2015vintagemars I don’t know if there is a limit on the number of AP credits given to engineering students for social science classes. My son reported that the social science APs turned out to be the most useful to him as he was able to apply all of them towards some requirements whereas he was not able to do so with all his math and science APs. I suppose it is best to discuss the matter with an advisor.
Also keep in mind that you will not get the results of the AP tests taken in senior year until this summer so you might have to come up with an initial schedule during orientation in the spring that does not account for them, and then update the schedule once you can send the results of the AP tests to ASU (as ASU will want the official results sent directly from the College Board before granting any credit).
On the other hand, my son reported that he was able to directly jump to English 105 simply thanks to his English SAT subscore, but needed to wait until the spring semester to enroll. This was unexpected (both the fact that the SAT score was a factor, and the fact that engineering students have to wait for the spring semester to enroll if they can skip English 101). But for math he had to take the “ALEKS” placement test despite getting a 790 math SAT subscore and 800 math subject SAT score.
This to say that all this is not straightforward and that it probably will be difficult to get a complete picture upfront, but enjoy your visit!
@NJEngineerDad - Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Very much appreciated. Do you mind sharing your son’s English subscore? My son got 680 for English in his first sitting, 690 on the second. But he only reported the 680 as his math was lower on the second one. DS20 didn’t take AP English, so we were not expecting him to be able to skip. It will be great if he could skip a class or two.
Great to hear the social science APs helped. DS20 is a typical engineering kid. Great scores for STEM subjects but not so great for humanities. So we will see how he handles Barrett’s courses.
What is “ALEKS” placement test? Is it pass/fail or do they place students to different levels depending on scores?
Thanks again for being so helpful to my many questions.
I now realize that the best outcome of taking ALEKS is only placement in Math 265 or 270. So, it looks like getting good score in AP Calculus AB or BC can help you jump further (since some students can directly enter at Calc level 2 or even level 3). And conversely, I am not sure what happens if you get a good AP Calc score but do poorly in ALEKS. You should attempt to get at least a 76 so you don’t need to find out.
@NJEngineerDad - I came across your other posts regarding your son’s academics in high school. He’s absolutely amazing! How does he like the first year engineering and Barrett classes at ASU? Does he feel challenged? Please feel free to PM. Thanks.
@vintagemars - the AP classes will count toward electives and some of the General University (Humanities HU and Social-behavioral Sciences SB) requirements and the General Studies Awareness (C, G, H). My DS is CS in Fulton, he brought 27 AP credits with him. A normal semester is 15 credits, so he started 1 class short of sophomore status.
