Anyone own this or planning on getting it?

Think its a good laptop?

Anyone know the minimum and maximum battery life you can get on this? (Comes with a 6-cell battery)

Would be a good idea to buy an extra 9-cell battery along with it?

Good idea to get it from Newegg?

Is it hard to downgrade from Vista to XP or 2000 prof?

I recommended a very similar ASUS laptop to my friend, though I forget the exact model (it was $1000, on sale IIRC). From that alone, I can tell you that it is absolutely astounding. Battery life for most laptops typically is around 3-4 hours, and if you’re planning on taking it out I would always get a spare 9 cell battery. I can’t recommend Newegg or ASUS enough. Also, I wouldn’t try to downgrade from Vista on it unless you’re extremely well-versed. I personally would not even attempt it, and I’ve got years of experience reloading operating systems. There are bound to be hardware compatability issues, especially with a laptop.

Asus has notoriously bad battery life. expect 2 or so hours tops out of the 6 cell.

That’s quite a blanket statement there, and like most blanket statements, it’s completely untrue. While the model you’re talking about probably has pretty short battery life, since the high-end graphics and processor are a huge power drain, there are more expensive Asus models out there with a high battery life. Chech out notebook review sites like [Notebook and Laptop Reviews](http://www.notebookreview.com) and cnet.com for great info on battery life and pros/cons of laptops, instead of going on CC. Most people here don’t know much about computers.

I do!

10char

Asus’s are notorious for their poor battery life…
their laptops without dedicated graphics cards and powerful processors get less battery life then other laptops with the same specs. Not to mention other laptops manage to get 3 hours out of a 6 cell even with a dedicated graphics card and high end processor, for example the XPS 1530.

Also go to the Asus forum on that link you provided and they will tell you the same thing.

From the link I provided:

“the powerful Asus G1S can provide excellent multimedia and gaming performance while remaining portable with good battery life.”

Of course, there’s also the Eee, and many other models that provide great battery life. Of course, most Asus computers are overpriced, imo, but so is the XPS.

The Asus G1S gets about 2h30m on battery saving mode. I don’t see that as good battery life since it only has an 8600 GT, there are plenty of laptops that get better battery life.

and yes the eee pc gets better battery life… it has no graphics card and a weak processor.

Also I own the Asus M50Sv and can vouch for the relatively por battery life.
