Asynchronous Scorers: math genius/verbal dummy or vice versa?

i was curious to know how many people on CC regard themselves as asynchronous scorers.
what is your strength and what is your weakness?
in what way do you think the discrepancy in your abilities will impact you?
where are you applying and what do you plan to major in?
what is the least horrible combination of strengths and weaknesses to have?

I suck at Math but I have pretty good Verbal skills. I excel at English and only scrape by in Math (although I take the highest level Math course). It just doesn’t come easy for me, while English is simple to me.

I am looking at a Pol. Sci. major/ Pre-Law in college, so Math isn’t really that important in my case.

It iis really strange in my case. I’ve always ben pretty good at math, this year I’m taking Math higher level (IB) and I got a 99 for this quarter, in the past I’ve been more or less around that grade. In english I’m an ok student, about 95-97 most of the times. The strange thing is that when I took the SAT practices ( Im doing the actually thing in about a week) and in my PSAT I did great in verbal etc but was average in math. Its wierd lol

English is one of my best - but because I worked so hard on my math score, the first time I took the ACT my math was higher and my english lower. Wierd…Also normally do alot better in science then math, couldn’t tell from THAT ACT…

My math and writing scores are really good but my critical reading score is lacking. But I wouldn’t say I was a ■■■■■■… D=

Anyway, I want to major in something bio-related.

In my opinion, it is beneficial to be a verbal person in terms of college admissions just because there’s a plethora of math people. I consider myself very well rounded, though (aside from my blatant illiteracy).

I’m a big time verbal person. I always slack off in English class and do incredibly well. I’m a “natural” writer I guess. In math, I’m good with the subject, I always do well in school, but I can’t seem to do well on math in tests at all. ACT-wise my reading and english were both 34 but math was down at 26. Anyway, hoping to do something with art/pol. science/int. relations/english haha, clearly undecided at this point. Oh and I actually think being a verbal person is an asset because, well, isn’t it easy to learn math and improve a test score than it is to change your reading habits?

i’m math okayness and writing and ciritcal reading really ■■■■■■■■.

I suck…in general.

i myself am a verbal person with profound retardation in math  by CC standards, anyway. 800 cr, 800 w, but 670 math. i scrape by with B’s in IB math studies, but i can get by english with my eyes closed. my math and english/humanities teachers wouldn’t know it if they were talking about the same kid.
i think verbal people might have a slight advantage in terms of admissions because of their rarity relative to the number of strong math people…then again, one could look at it the other way and say that people who don’t do well at math are worse off because it’s generally expected of applicants to have higher math scores---- we’re failing at something “easy.”

It’s rather ironic that you are a verbal person, because I believe the word you are looking for is “asymmetrical”.

(This is light-hearted fun-poking, please don’t take offense.)

Heeheee. I’m a little…well, my score seems to favor CR and DISFAVOR Writing. A little weird… CR730,M690,W610. But I guess it means I’m better at reading than writing/grammar. (But I like my English class and my History teacher likes my history essays…:()

I want to major in the sciences, bio/biochem/biotech, so I’m a little peeved at my math score.

October SAT (first time and last time)
790M
610V
720W

You do the…math.

I am so mad at myself.
I certainly am not a math genius, as I marvel at them in my school. With that said, I also do not think I’m THAT terrible in verbal skills (in non-CC standards, of course). All the practice tests I got (in the blue book), I was able to score 630, 650, 660, 670. I found the October SAT V section extremely difficult, but 610?!?

I think higher Verbal scores are better than math skills because…they just are.

Oh, and I always thought V and W would go hand in hand, but I guess not.

none taken, dualityim. i know that psychologists often refer to discrepant levels of ability as “asynchronous,” especially as they concern sub-adults  you’re right— it’s probably not the most fitting word. “asynchronous” seems to imply that the weaknesses will eventually rectify themselves… I think it might just be a PC, albeit inaccurate, label. asymmetrical is more accurate. i don’t think it likely that our scores will suddenly balance out in the near future…

a friend of mine got a 800 in math and a 450 in CR. he’s an international student nevertheless

Yep, a pal of my sister’s a few years ago got around the same score, too! So his total was same as my sisters, though my sister’s was a little more even.

Writing is hard to beef up on, I think…all the grammar…not everybody’s born to be a copyeditor!

800 in maths and 460 in verbal geez… and I thought a score of 800 in maths and 560 Verbal + an “A” in English Language and Literature was asynchronous!!
Is that a healthy discrepancy BTW, even for a Intel applying to top 10 LAC?

You know what’s really horrible? I want to go into the hard sciences, molecular biology or even physics, and I got an 800cr, 750w and 700 math! The colleges will think I’m nuts. Darn my English-major mother!

Damn why dont you give me your CR score and take my Math score :D

I am a math geek with 6 on AMIE and 690 on math SAT which is even lower than my reading and writing. And I want to major in physics. So what am I?

I have always regarded myself as best in Math in general… though I enjoy reading, the whole reading books for school thing bores me out of my mind, and I hate the passages on the SAT (pure torture to do practice tests)
However, I think I tend to have too much fun (yes fun) on the Math section, and make silly mistakes…
So I ended up with a 790 CR and 720 Math

go figure?
