At Buffalo Wild Wings, 23 oz = 16 oz

So we had dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings last night. Ordered a Stella Artois on tap which came in a globy glass and which I drank it with my dinner. When the bill came, it said 23oz Stella for $5.75. I thought, I did not drink 23 oz (almost 2 bottles equivalent) of beer with my dinner. I rarely even finish 1 bottle and I did not feel any different. And, weighing at 100lbs, I wasn’t sure I should drive if I had 23 oz of beer in under an hour.

After back and forth with the waitress, measuring out by the manager, it turns out they actually dole out slightly more than 16oz (500 cc) of beer into the glass. So why the 23oz label on the bill, I asked. Oh, that’s just what the button we push, they said. But you are not giving out 23oz, I says. We have no control over that, ma’am, they says.

So, despite all the real problems in the world, this really bugs me. It’s fraudulent and I think it’s just to make the $5.75 look more reasonable than it really is.

Slimey. Don’t think we’ll eat there again. Thanks for letting me vent.

The manager there clearly doesn’t have an engineering degree. I think most engineering students would quickly figure out why it’s a 23 oz Stella.

It’s because the globy glass displaces 23 ounces of water when a guy puts it in a bucket (ensuring that no water enters the glass).

Ah, so the next time I buy a 16 oz steak at a restaurant, they would be justified in serving me an 8 oz piece as long as the plate weighs 16 oz?

I’m lost . . . was it advertised as a 23oz Stella on the bar menu? When you ordered it, did you think you were getting 23 oz? Did you, while you were drinking it, ever say to yourself “Hey! This is nowhere near 23 oz!.”

Sorry,

The menu just said “Beer on Tap” and listed the various kinds. No sizes/prices. When the bill came, it said “23oz Stella” and that’s when I said “that wasn’t 23 oz,” and in fact, it really was 16 oz of beer in the glass.

Yea, I know, silly thing to keep going on about. It’s the principle of the thing, darn it.

I’ve never heard of that chain but I suggest you contact their corporate headquarters and inform them there of the incident and your perception of their less than forthright practices because of what’s printed on the receipt, the practical confusion it caused you in that you were concerned you might have had too much to drink to be able to drive based just on the ounces they state, and the fact that the restaurant didn’t actually have a ready answer for it (hence their back and forth and measuring, etc.), and perhaps give them a suggestion that they change their point of sale software to put an accurate description of the item on the receipt (which should be easy on their part).

Maybe they’ll send you gift card to their restaurant for the input.

The question I would be asking myself is if $5.75 is more than I wanted to spend for a 16 ounce Stella. If that is a reasonable price for the beer you consumed, and if you had not looked so closely at the bill, would this even be an issue?

As for me, I always order a large Stella. And I am now officially jealous of my daughter who is studying abroad and spending the weekend in Belgium.

Definitely write an email to corporate. The last thing they want is you to be all over the internet talking about how Buffalo is charging 23 oz prices for 16 oz of beer. Tell 'em you put it on CC and had a 151 hits in a couple of hours. That’s 151 people (plus friends and relations) who will think twice before a) going to BWW, perhaps without even remembering why and b) think twice about ordering a beer.

ghostfire13 – Couldn’t care less about Belgian Beer. I don’t drink. But Belgian chocolate? Yeah, count me as jealous of your daughter too!

so is a schooner 16oz? or is that a pint?
A schooner as it is sold locally doesn’t seem to be 16 oz- maybe 12?

<<<<<<<<sigh>>>>>>>>>
I can’t drink beer anymore anyway- unless I find one that isn’t made w wheat.</sigh>

EmeraldKitty – My Dh is a beer-guy but also gluten-free. He drinks Redbridge from Anheuser-Busch. It’s good enough…he gets it from Harris Teeter but it’s sold all over. Even some restaurants are starting to carry it.

http://www.redbridgebeer.com/</a></p>

You could also contact the local health department or weights/measures department. This is up there with gas stations shorting you on a gallon of gas, but charging you for a full gallon.

If you get no satisfaction, call a TV consumer reporter - they love these types of stories.

Funny that you mention Buffalo Wild Wings. An acquaintence we know mentioned how good the wings were there, so we figured we’d give it a try. We were NOT impressed at all. My H, who is usually so easy going, could not believe HOW MUCH we were paying for such wimpy portions. (At the time I think we got the boneless wings…)

Anyway, we also vowed NEVER to go there again…I try as often as possible to go to local “mom and pop” type restaurants, the portions are great, the food is great and they try hard to please you. These chains could care less.

Stella Artois comes in a 22.4 oz bottle. I suppose that is why there is a “23 oz. Stella Artois” button on the cash register. And the cash register is programmed by the chain hq, no doubt.

There is probably no separate button for “draft Stella Artois by the glass.” So they just press the 23 oz. Stella Artois button.

Next time, I’d get it in the bottle a(s if there will be a next time). At least you can be sure of getting 22.4 oz of beer…

<a href=“Home | Anheuser-Busch”>Home | Anheuser-Busch;

Do glasses of beer of other specialty beers on draft cost $5.75? Is that their normal price for a goby glass of draft premium beer?

Novelisto: When I found out she was going to Belgium I immediately thought of chocolate, then beer, and then waffles (though I’m not sure if they really have waffles there or if that’s just what we call them here).

I just looked at a bottle of Stella in my fridge and it is 11.2 ounces. I believe I paid $9.99 for the six-pack, on sale. So $5.75 for a draft 16 ounce glass at a restaurant does not sound excessive. Draft beer always tastes better anyway.
