At high schools that do not publish class rank, do colleges using The Common Application use the counselor’s school report as a backdoor way of estimating class rank?

The counselor’s school report at https://commonapp.my.salesforce.com/sfc/p/#d0000000eEna/a/0V000001Avzq/PBXzR0UOtu4hSdgTXHDH9Sk6bTeQ6w8l2NQblq_KoZ0 has this question:

Each one has check boxes, of which the best three are listed as “Excellent (top 10%)”, “Outstanding (top 5%)”, and “One of the top few I’ve encountered (top 1%)”.

Seems like a backdoor way to get a class rank estimate, although it may include some subjective judgment by the counselor rather than only by a GPA formula determined by the school beforehand.

My kids’ school doesn’t publish rank, but the GCs do know the approximate rank. My understanding is that the GCs don’t fill out that common app section you reference above, but will tell an AO the approximate rank if they ask.

The HS profile used to only have a median weighted GPA for the class, but now it shows a weighted mid 50%ile range.
