I think that is reasonable.
we need to follow the laws. The laws do not need to be changed.
The laws were followed , but unfortunately they didn’t work in this circumstance. 3 days waiting time was not sufficient to determine that Roof should not have been sold a gun. The gun shop owner was within the law and his rights to sell him the gun as the law is currently written. Many store owners will not sell a gun if they can’t get the results of a background check, but it’s at their discretion ,not the law.

No simple explanations for the hate here. None at all.
[Obama Greeted by Confederate Flag Wavers in Oklahoma](Obama Confederate Flag: Protesters Greet President in Oklahoma | Time)
Of course, they deny that waving a confederate flag at a black president has it has anything whatsoever to do with racist bigotry. No no, it’s an innocent display of pride in their “heritage” (of slavery, but that’s beside the point).
So, instead of Tea Party flags, they now show their true colors with the CBF.
Yep. It does seem that code is being abandoned more and more.
I’ve always believed that the supporters of the confederacy were the most anti-American group on Earth, but to boldly display their hate-filled flag in front of the leader of the free world… Good God!
I highly suspect you are aware of the Catch-22 here.
They can “boldly display” because they are free. Said another way: Without such ability to freely shove something controversial in “the leader of the free [world’s]” face, freedom would be a sham, and that person would not really be “leader of the free world.”
So for you, wanting smaller limited government, lower taxes, and stricter adherence to the Constitution is the same as wanting the Confederate Battle Flag.
An alternate thought - you need to get your head checked as much as Roof does.
Actually, i’d bet that Roof agrees with you about “limited government, lower taxes, and stricter adherence to the Constitution.”
Dylann Roof has been found guilty of 33 counts of crimes in federal court. These do not include murder charges that he will face in state court.

The crimes, according to http://www.uscourts.gov/courts/scd/2-15-472-roof-indictment.pdf , were:
9 counts of Hate Crime Act resulting in death
3 counts of Hate Crime Act involving an attempt to kill
9 counts of obstructing exercise of religion resulting in death
3 counts of obstructing exercise of religion involving attempt to kill and use of a dangerous weapon
9 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during and in relation to a crime of violence
A twisted mind for sure, but can’t decide whether or not he is “sick.” Some of these violently malevolent types are frighteningly rational, or so they appear.
@lakewashington:
That raises an interesting question that I personally don’t think has a solid answer, and that is for someone to commit a crime like this do they necessarily have to be mentally ill? The law as far as I know, for example, doesn’t necessarily accept that a person was mentally ill and in effect absolve them of the crime (obviously, they would hopefully be put away if found innocent by reason of insanity), but for example in this case, is hate itself a mental illness? The fact that one hates can lead a person to do unmentionable things, but in the end, does that mean when they do the crime they aren’t culpable, or is it they are culpable because even though they hated so deeply, they knew darn well what they were doing was wrong and simply fed into the hate?
I personally find the claim that anyone who kills is mentally ill to be simplistic at its worst, in large part because crimes like this one are not based in logic, but rather in emotions, and letting emotions get the best of you is not a mental illness. If Roof claimed to hear voices telling him to kill members of a black church, that would be mental illness at work, or if he assumed for some reason they meant to do him harm, you could argue that; but hatred of the kind he had is not mental illness to me, someone who hates like that has simply let his emtions take over and stopped thinking in a sense and I think branding him as mentally ill simply because (as I assume from reading about the case) he hated blacks that much trivializes both murder, and also doesn’t do anything to help the mentally ill, not the least which being that this will lead to the idea that mentally ill people=homocide, when it doesn’t in most cases. Basically it is a cop out for any would be hater, kills a bunch of people, then have a lawyer claim that they hated because they had a bad past, were under the influence of someone, etc and therefore were ‘mentally ill’.
No. Racism, hatred, violence, etc are not a mental illness. They are just that- racism, hatred, violence, etc.
If you have been indoctrinated into thinking that there are people who don’t deserve to live, the extreme end of racism, then killing someone seems perfectly normal.
I am currently working with letters and other documents between politicians, doctors, social workers, etc from the way too late into the 20th century where they’re discussing openly how to make euthanasia of “defectives” legal and practice it on a large scale. Were these people mentally ill? I won’t retroactively diagnosis someone but no, they were just convinced that certain people didn’t deserve to live.
I think that’s where Dylann’s mind was. They don’t deserve to live.
Dylann Roof = Josef Mengele on a different but similar scale. They both believed that some groups of people do not deserve to live. Of course, a miscreant like Roof probably considers the comparison an honor. Both Roof and Mengele said they were ‘simply doing their duty to their country.’
IMO , everyone who commits murder is not mentally ill. And whenever I see statements attributing all terrible things to mental illness,it makes me cringe. No wonder mentally ill people don’t access services . People lump them with hateful people.
Try Roof for the multiple murders and get it over with. That animal needs to be executed, pronto.
"They can “boldly display” because they are free. Said another way: Without such ability to freely shove something controversial in “the leader of the free [world’s]” face, freedom would be a sham, and that person would not really be “leader of the free world.” Agreed, for the same reason that those trube blue patriot types who want to put people in jail for burning the flag or protesting are wrong.
That said, though, the freedom to pull that flag in front of the president only shows what those pulling the flag out are, a bunch of losers who never got over the ‘glory’ of the good ole days when blacks were either enslaved or might as well have been sigh. I hear there is a resurganc in the klan, and unlike past years they are now being treated, instead of with disdain like anyone of good conscience should, as some sort of relevant voice. And free speech doesn’t mean giving the morons who fly the confederate flag and whatnot a free pass, either, people should show them the disdain they deserve. Despite claims to the contrary, the good ole boys didn’t start with the confederate flag shirts and bumper stickers and flags until the 1950’s and 1960’s, which tells the truth to what it all was about.
Dylann Roof sentenced to death (instead of life in prison without possibility of parole).
