At what age do you stop sending nieces and nephews birthday money.

Any opinions on when to stop giving nieces and nephew birthday money? They all live out of town and I always send a card and a check and now they are all older than 18. Just wondering when is the appropriate time to just send a card?

We definitely stopped by age 18. An e-card that will bring a smile is about all we do now . . …

18

18 except for college graduation.

22 (after college graduation) - unless they are wealthy  College kids SOOO appreciate getting cash, its nice to keep it up through college. After that, they get a birthday text and social media acknowledgement.

i gave until they graduated college.

I’m still doing it for the nephew and nieces on my side of the family (ages 19, 21, and 23).

We stopped at college graduation.

My grandparents send money until we turn eighteen! Not all of my cousins are going to college so I think they chose an age consistent for everyone

We also stopped sending birthday and Christmas money for nieces and nephews at college graduation or age 22. Great-nieces and great-nephews get books. My mom never stops. =) Lucky kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids.

Hmm, I’m 61. I still receive a birthday check from my aunt. I send a check to my nieces and nephew, too.

@mominva - That is too funny. I wish I still received money from my Aunts

This reminds me of a (true) family story: One of my great-aunts had the practice of sending birthday cards with one dollar per year of the recipient’s age. When my cousin turned 16, he sent my great-aunt a thank-you note for the birthday money and concluded with, “Next year, I plan to turn 50.”

@QuantMech -LOL. Smart thinking on your cousins part

college graduate AND have had a job lined up.

One niece lost her job and could not find a job for a while. We still sent her money when we heard about it. Not that much (about $300 from us) but she has several uncles and aunts. (She has a job now.)

Just put a card plus check in the mail for a nephew’s 27th b-day. We have a total of 3 nieces and nephews. We are close to all of them and we still enjoy acknowledging their birthdays with a relevant gift card or cash.

21years.
Many nieces and nephews. Use to mail 27 gifts at the Holidays. Now think how silly.
So happy to have one kid left and at least we really know her.

Have been hit and miss once they start college. My sibs stopped sending to my kids, so I mostly stopped sending to theirs. If a birthday party is thrown, I bring a gift, regardless of the age of the niece, nephew or sib or inlaw. So far, all have attended college and I fully expect all will get at least BA/BS. Two have professional degrees and two will be working on MD degrees. Some of those with bachelor’s degrees will likely go to grad/pro schools.

I have been trying to figure this out myself. I only still give gifts to one set of cousins (more like nieces) and their parents (my aunt and uncle). Cousins are now 25 and 27, but haven’t finished college. Maybe 30 for us, but that’s just a guess.
