At what point does Penn look at Rank?

Currently, me and a friend are tied with our class rank at 3. However, my friend is signed up for an extra semester class that will push his rank above mine by .0244 by the end of this year, so then i will be ranked 4 at the end of junior year. Now next year (senior year), i am taking 7 weighted classes and he is taking 6, but if i apply ED the first semester of senior year will not be over, so i will still be ranked 4 instead of #3, which i will be at the end of first semester and then my GPA will be higher by the end of the school year. So does Penn look simply at Rank and GPA at the end of Junior year for ED or not. Also does this even matter, will it make a huge difference to be 4 instead of 3 in a class of 596.

Trust me the difference between rank 3 and 4 is minimal. I understand your concern but really, don’t fret over it. It’s not worth it at all. Just do your best.
