Athlete Going to Columbia--Is Columbia Fun and Preppy!

Hi

I am pretty sure that I am going to Columbia for crew next year, and I am very excited to be in NYC, but I come from a super traditional and preppy boarding school, and I actually love that lifestyle, and don’t want to lose that in college. I get that Columbia is a cultural melting pot filled with incredibly smart people from all over the world, and I totally appreciate that, and that is one of the reasons I like Columbia, so I can open my horizons.

BUT… I have grown up in a preppy environment my whole life, and some of you might say that I am an elitist, but I love the tradition, the lifestyle, the community, the clothing, and the education. I want to make sure that I am still getting part of that experience that I love and have grown up around.

I don’t want to be the only person dressed in hunter rainboots and a barbour wanting to go to a kegger party, and I don’t want to have to deal with a bunch of intellectuals chain smoking cigarettes on the Lower steps 24/7. This is a little silly, but I also want to make sure that there are boys I can date here that share at least some of the things that are important to me…

thanks!

In all seriousness. There are all types at Columbia, preppies included.

You’ll have a great time at Columbia, and in NYC, if you come with an open mind willing to embrace all sorts of people…from the preps to the chain smokers and then some. Crew is a self selecting preppy sport, even when it’s happening is the Hudson River. The dating pool should be fine but elitist is never fun.

You’re a Dartmouth man. (woman?)

This is strange. In another post you were deciding between Barnard and Northwestern: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1515708-deciding-where-ed-between-barnard-northwestern-helpp-i-will-chance-you.html#post16052601

You can certainly row crew for Columbia if you attend Barnard, but my question is: will you be attending Barnard? If so, you’ll have ostensibly all of the same opportunities as you would have if you went to one of Columbia’s three undergrad schools - clubs, sports, soroities etc. - but there will some obvious differences - no Core, different dorms…

Perhaps clarifying this would help you get all the information that you need to make this very important decision.

We chain smoke in front of Butler.

Please go to Dartmouth.

Are there preppy sheltered people at Columbia? Of course. Is that the dominant culture? Not at all. You’d probably be happier somewhere with a little more pep and a little less cynicism.

Just in case you haven’t seen: [The Only College Confidential Post You Should Ever Read > College Confidential, Columbia, crew, elitism, preppy, Prospies, recruitment, this is why people hate the ivy league | IvyGate](http://www.ivygateblog.com/2013/10/the-only-college-confidential-you-should-ever-read/)

Come. I can tell you’ll love Columbia. You’re just waiting to be drawn out, and Columbia will do it.

Neither Columbia, Barnard, or Northwestern really sound like your kind of school. My friends who went to Dartmouth and Princeton are much more the Barbour/Hunter/kegger types.

That being said, I’m sure this kind of person exists at Columbia. One of the sororities (perhaps Theta) is bound to fit your niche.
