Athletes

It might be a simple question, but whatever. I read a recent thread mentioning that Columbia gave out their likely letters to mostly athletes. How do they find athletes? Do they meet them before hand, or send likely letters to people who put down varsity sports on their app? Thanks in advance for any responses.

athletes are recruited. this usually happens because coaches know the way to find top athletes - they are state or nationally recognized. and also because within the ivies it is pretty well known who is also a top athlete and also academically competitive.

there are some athletes that fly under the radar, those students are welcome to go to the cu athletics website and each team has a place where you submit your information. if the coaches like what they see, they might contact you.

in the end it is the coach that recruits the player, but it is the admissions office that admits the student.

this has a lot of information if you are interested. specifically regarding likely letters:

Admissions Offices at each Ivy school may offer some athletic and other candidates a “likely” letter, which has the effect of a formal letter of admission provided the candidate continues to have a satisfactory secondary school experience. Coaches may initiate the requests for these letters, but only the office of admission can issue a “likely” letter.

I am an international student & I am willing to play for Men’s Soccer Team. I have submitted Part I of my application in Mid-September. Columbia is clearly my No.1 choice and I have conveyed it effectively both in my application and in my interview. I had my interview on 1st December.

By the way, I have filled up that recruit form in the first week of November. But, the coach has not contacted me yet. My academic index will be around 225(I calculated it from CC’s academic index calculator). I have written about my interest for playing in the Columbia Lion’s Varsity Men Soccer Team in the additional information section. So, the admission officers knows about my interest.

Does this makes me an athletic recruit? And, also I am an international requiring aid (My EFC is about $6000 dollars).

If you haven’t been contacted by a coach then I don’t think that your an athletic recruit. Maybe a prospect, but not a recruit.
I don’t know when soccer signings are but most athletes get recruited early on. You should have been in contact with a coach starting in or right after your junior year.
