Athletic scholarships in Bentley

Hi there, I want to transfer to Bentley University. I’m a tennis player, currently at a D1. I don’t want to stay at that school where I am now and I know Bentley is a good school for business/economics, which is what i’m interested in. I don’t really care that much about sports. That said, I am looking to play tennis there for a scholarship. I checked out the tennis team, and my level would probably be a match there (i am currently playing as number 1 in my team). Does Bentley give out scholarships for tennis, does anyone know? Is it possible to get almost a full ride? I also currently am a sophomore and have a 4.0.

A few things:

  1. Bentley does give athletic scholarships, but relatively few (compared to how many athletes they have) and at an average far below full tuition. Per the 2024/25 CDS, see row P and Q:

  1. Do you plan on entering the transfer portal in May?

  2. Only the Bentley coach is going to be able to tell you if they have a need for a roster spot and how much they have available in athletic scholarships for portal transfer athletes.

  3. Will you qualify for any need based aid?

All of Bentley’s athletic scholarships go to the money making teams. Most teams have zero scholarships. My guess is tennis is one of the no scholarship teams, but you can inquire with the coach.

I will be transferring in may, yes. I am an international student, from what i have read i dont think they give need based aid to internationals. What about my academics, would I be able to get some academic scholarship as well?

thats fair, yeah. thank you!

Transfers typically do not get decent funding because most of the schools’ budget is typically set, has been delineated for freshman and their continuing education.

Our daughter was recruited athlete for tennis. She chose not to go that route because she didn’t want to play tennis anymore and she was afraid of getting injured and then having to pay for the completion of her degree.

The tennis budgets have not been very strong. The coaches have limited budgets, as it is, and I can’t see them providing a full academic and tennis scholarship to bring a transfer on board. That means they would have to change their lineup. That’s not a popular thing with the teams.

The financial aid offices make predictions about the incoming funding. The Federal government has cut a lot of university funding, such that the universities are having to get into their coffers and endowments to fund programs and labor.

International students are considered “cash cows” because they are mostly full pay and help bring in the dollars with the bottom line of the budget.

Didn’t you have to put aside money to indicate that you could pay for your education in order to get a visa?

Remember that a student Visa allows you to be here for your education. After you receive your diploma, you will be expected to return to your Home country. You may want to start looking at companies in your country for their requirements.

I could pay the full tuition if needed, however, it would put a strain on my parents. I would later continue my education in Europe. I would be willing to pay around 15-17k a year for school here.

That you are an international student was an important detail you left out.

Are you paying $15k-17k at your current school? I don’t think there’s any way that Bentley gets to that price for a transfer. I don’t know your academics so can’t comment as to how much merit aid you might get at Bentley or anywhere, but it sounds like you need at least full tuition, which is tough to get for an international with no financial need.

okay, thank you. I currently have a 4.0 GPA (I had a 4.0 in all of the semesters) and i study economics.

That’s the cost for housing alone.

Bentley has become a good option for people who want to play something other than D3 (often ego because they are D3 level).

That seems to be the benefit they offer - aside from it being a good education. The people I know who play sports do not get $$.
