My D asks for socks each birthday and Hanukkah. Usually I go to Ross and buy an assortment usually Puma. They don’t last her long. I have a $30 free code from Zappos and I was thinking I would order her socks and try some other brands that might be more suitable for her level of exercise and last a bit longer.
She is extremely fit. Goes to the gym 7 days a week, some days of the week she will go at both lunch and after work. She works out hard and her socks and clothes end up drenched. I’m not sure everything she does but I know she runs and also lifts weight in addition to taking various classes (Hiit, body sculpt, body pump) at lunch.
Recommendations?
I buy Thorlos specifically for playing tennis but they make socks for almost every sport.
I do a lot (I will note, the vast majority of everything I do is outside - I have never run on a treadmill, for example) - run, bike, hike, rock climb/scramble, raft, push-ups, etc. I have found that the best socks for me have been regular wool socks (yes, even in the summer). I have noticed a signifcant difference in blisters when running long distances, as compared to traditional running socks (although I haven’t tried very high-end ones). I think it has to do with the natural properties of wool. Personally, I am not really gear-oriented, unless it’s something that’s essential, so I just use regular wool socks, but I know there are athletic/running wool socks. Durability may still be an issue, but comfort-wise, I think it’s the way to go!
Some favorites in our household are Thorlo and Feetures.
I have a pair of Feetures that I have had for at least 5 years, I wear them once or twice a week and they are still in good shape, I like the amount of elasticity they have, they do not shift or rub at all. My H likes Thorlo and he is a serious athlete.
I REALLY like Balega socks. There are thinner versions, thicker versions and different height cuts. They are going to be more expensive than a pack of socks at discount stores (which I also buy) but they last much longer.
I don’t see Balega at Zappos. I have also tried these and really liked them: Feetures http://www.zappos.com/womens-athletic-clothing~R#!/feetures-women-socks/CKvXARDO1wE6Ap8NWgLmCsABAeICBQEYBwIL.zso?s=isNew/desc/productPopularity/asc/
They have great reviews.
Also edited to say I wear the above for running, walking, gym machines, etc. Being truthful, I want to wear them ALL the time. I do not like thick socks. I do appreciate a little padding in the right places.
I am surprisingly picky about my socks. I do not like thorlo’s. Too thick. What is important to me is socks that come in sizes. I have a small foot and need a small sock.
I like Balega (have my pair on now), feetures and smartwool for winter. My D is into cross fit and she has socks that are popular with cross fitters. Lol, so many choices for socks.
I’ve seen the email about the $30 Zappos credit. What is the catch? I haven’t looked into it.
Balega, SwiftWick, Wright The popular socks now are the Stance crew socks- get the running ones and not the thick boot ones. They have cool designs and while crew socks were very un-cool for years, they are now “in”.
Stance, those are the socks my D got. I couldn’t remember the name.
Thanks for the ideas.
For those who suggested Feetures how does the sizing run. She is a 6 1/2 shoe size which puts her at the top of the small size.
@CheddarcheeseMN - I don’t see any catch. If you sign up for Zappos rewards you get the credit. It doesn’t appear you have to spend any minimum to use it.
Has anyone tried the Bombas socks that are always in my ad feed?
I don’t like Balega, Wright, or Feetures. I prefer the Pearl Izumi Women’s Silk Lite Sock. It is so soft with good elastic in the arch.
I think you should buy her a small variety and see what she prefers.
BTW the Stance boot socks are super thick and comfy in boots. I want to try their athletic socks but I am super picky about the seam, the softness, and the sizing.
I would get the medium in the Feetures if she is at the top of the small size.
Darn Tough (Vermont) are good, too.
I’m a 6 in street shoes and D is a 6 1/2. We like the smalls but we both have skinny feet. In the feetures socks.
I bought bombas and really like them. I have a pair of the crew socks and wish I had ordered more of that style. Very soft. I’ve run in them but I’m only a 3 mile runner.
I wear a size 7 1/2 and my D is a 6 1/2, I get mediums for myself and small for her.
Bummer my coupon expired! I’ll order a variety anyway.
