Attacks in Bangladesh

Here we go again :frowning:

It’s a developing story.

One of my best friends is Bengali and is in Bangladesh right now. I have no idea where she is and I’m desperately trying to get ahold of her :frowning:

Not to bump this, but I did want to update anyone wondering. Got ahold of my friend (it was late so they were asleep and unaware). She and her family are fine. They don’t live near the situation. They’re still heartbroken though.

I think that ISIS and ISIS wannabes killing anyone is terrible. I think it’s even worse when they intentionally kill Muslims during Ramadan.

It’s hard for barbarians to one-up themselves.

Primary targets of violence there have been native non-Muslims, secular bloggers and foreigners.

Shaking my head. The new normal in the world…

:frowning:

How is this for ironic - I was literally listening to the song “Bangladesh” by George Harrison when the news report came on. I agree - SMH, sad that this is the new normal.

" I think it’s even worse when they intentionally kill Muslims during Ramadan."—no need to worry non muslims were tortured and muslims spared. that should help you feel better.
"Karim said his son told him that the attackers “did not hit people who could recite verses from the Koran. The others were tortured,” he said. "

“They (gunmen) did not behave rough with the Bangladesh nationals,” Reazul said quoting his victim son Hasnat. “Rather they provided night meals for all Bangladeshis.”

“The gunmen were doing a background check on religion by asking everyone to recite from the Quran. Those who could recite a verse or two were spared. The others were tortured.”

Killing people is terrible. There are terrible and more terrible situations but nothing makes any of them better or makes me feel better about them.

Well I guess now we know how to do the religion checks. I’m off to memorize passages of assorted religious doctrines so that I’m prepared for whatever.

One of those killed was a popular Cal student:

My D heard from a good friend via Facebook post (this friend is a Bangladeshi national whom D met when they both studied physics in college) that she and her family had been heading to dine at that same restaurant that evening, but were delayed by traffic. Had they been on time, they most likely would have been there at the time of the attack. One of the police officers killed was a friend of D’s friend’s mother. They were all incredibly shaken by how close they came to being at the heart of this tragedy.

It seems that Isis is hell bent on terrorizing and disrupting as much of the world as possible, but it seems the world hasn’t yet the collective stomach to eradicate it. I can’t imagine what it will take.

I don’t think it’s a matter of stomaching it. I think it’s a matter of not having any real idea of how to combat daesh.

ETA: It’s also unclear who was actually behind this. Daesh took credit but most officials seem to believe it was actually al Qaeda.

My friend was in the same neighborhood as the attacks. It’s scary because I didn’t even realize it was happening until he mentioned it. He is there on a summer research trip after graduating college and says that he is fine, but it is still scary that it can happen so close to home.

According to another post 2 Emory/Oxford students ( one recent grad) were also killed.

Yes. Condolences to the families of the Emory students.

Daesh and its supporters may be lashing out because its caliphate territory is slowly being nibbled away.

Guess they’ve finally figured out that the administrative running of a caliphate is a lot less “fun” than terrorizing.
