Not to bump this, but I did want to update anyone wondering. Got ahold of my friend (it was late so they were asleep and unaware). She and her family are fine. They don’t live near the situation. They’re still heartbroken though.
How is this for ironic - I was literally listening to the song “Bangladesh” by George Harrison when the news report came on. I agree - SMH, sad that this is the new normal.
“They (gunmen) did not behave rough with the Bangladesh nationals,” Reazul said quoting his victim son Hasnat. “Rather they provided night meals for all Bangladeshis.”
“The gunmen were doing a background check on religion by asking everyone to recite from the Quran. Those who could recite a verse or two were spared. The others were tortured.”
Well I guess now we know how to do the religion checks. I’m off to memorize passages of assorted religious doctrines so that I’m prepared for whatever.
My D heard from a good friend via Facebook post (this friend is a Bangladeshi national whom D met when they both studied physics in college) that she and her family had been heading to dine at that same restaurant that evening, but were delayed by traffic. Had they been on time, they most likely would have been there at the time of the attack. One of the police officers killed was a friend of D’s friend’s mother. They were all incredibly shaken by how close they came to being at the heart of this tragedy.
It seems that Isis is hell bent on terrorizing and disrupting as much of the world as possible, but it seems the world hasn’t yet the collective stomach to eradicate it. I can’t imagine what it will take.
My friend was in the same neighborhood as the attacks. It’s scary because I didn’t even realize it was happening until he mentioned it. He is there on a summer research trip after graduating college and says that he is fine, but it is still scary that it can happen so close to home.
