Auburn is one of the schools that I am considering to attend. If I do end up going (probably will) I really want to live on campus. I know that te on campus housing is really limited so it is making me nervous that I won’t get one. I have to pay my deposit before applying for housing so I really need to be sure that I am going to go there before paying. If I apply for housing before Christmas, do I have much of a chance at getting on campus housing?

You can ask the housing department but I believe the wait list begins around February and it was maybe even later this year. If you want Honors housing or you want to stay in the apartment style suites, you will want to go ahead and pay your deposit right away.

What dorms would you recommend on campus? Also if I don’t get to live on campus, can I take a bus to campus?

I have a 32 act and 3.8 gpa. I filled out the general scholarship application, is that all I do to be considered for the presidential scholarship? When can I expect to hear back?

Wait, you’d turn down UAlabama’s full scholarship for Auburn???

lol…I know.

Bama has a better location, better campus housing (and more of it), and is better ranked. Auburn is in cow town.

She’s expressed an interest in Nursing. Bama has a gorgeous new Capstone College of Nursing building (very state of the art) right across the street from DCH Medical Center…which is an affiliation with MD Anderson…
http://nursing.ua.edu/

I think that if this student actually did a full tour, honors tour, etc, at Bama she’d realize that her assumptions are extreme.

Penelope - the dorms are truly an individual choice. My son selected one of the honors dorms in the Quad because it was literally right in the center of everything. He can roll out of bed and into the RBD Library to his left and roll out of his bed and be at the student center on his right or walk out the back door to the engineering buidings. There is an honors student center in the basement of his dorm and lots of activity in the quad. However, it is a traditional dorm with 2 boys to a room sharing a bathroom with another room of 2 boys - so 4 boys to a bathroom. One of the apartment style dorms is for honors only…I don’t recall which one off hand but my son went with the traditional so he was not tempted to shut his door and study all the time, he would be social. Well, he’s in the band so that happened anyway!

m2ck - not always - my son, thanks to you, had a great tour with Alabama and full OOS tuition, honors, etc offered - Alabama did everything right, including recruiting the parents and yet he still selected Auburn. I like Auburn too, although I would have been happy with either school but he made the decision and is extremely happy with his choice. Everyone mentions “fit” on this forum and that’s what mattered to my son and I think he found it.

Also, why does Alabama say they have better campus housing? Certainly they have more, but Auburn has the village which is the same as the apartment style dorms at Alabama…what am I not understanding?

Penelope - I don’t know what Cow Town is (and you think I’d know since I’m from Texas) but if it’s a lovely area with gracious, intelligent, well mannered people…then yes, it’s in Cow Town. War Eagle!!!

Auburn housing is limited but does have many options. My son lived in the village honors housing. The suites are beautiful but they make it easy for students to close their doors.
It can be quiet so you need to get involved on campus. He did and loved it. He has friends who lived in the quad and were very happy too. It is very important to get your housing deposit in so you will have choices.

There are many great off campus apartments too. The Auburn transportation system is very efficient and picks up at many
apartment complexes -if you go that route.

We also had an impressive tour of Alabama. Clearly both are great , however, the vibe at these schools is very different. He had scholarships to both but a larger one at Bama. After touring several other schools he kept coming back to Auburn. Fit is important and Auburn was his…he found challenging academics, beautiful campus and surrounding area, top co-op opportunities and good friends.

Three of three … Bama has a LOT more Super Suites than Auburn . A Lot more!! The numbers aren’t even close . The Village has less than 500 super suites beds.

.And how many are For Greeks?

Bama has over 3000 super Suites beds. And 1000 more will be ready next August. And none are for Greeks.
So I guess that’s what You’re missing . LOL

I wasn’t disputing the number of suites available but my son had the same available to him at both schools. Honestly housing was not quite as important as I believe Alabama thought it might be. Clearly to some it’s very important. Likewise the Auburn Engineering student who was touting Auburn as the most conservative school was the wrong thing to say to a family of well-read moderate independents. Student was spouting what he thought was valuable sales info and couldn’t really explain why that was important. But we look past those things and my son really felt Auburn was where he belonged.

M2CK don’t quit selling UA - it is truly a tremendous school with great opportunities and it’s obvious you are very passionate about the school. That’s a good thing but my son goes to Auburn and I support his choice. Sorry - way too wordy.

what am I not understanding?

I was responding to your statement as to why Bama’s housing is better (which is the OP’s concern…and the thread wasn’t in Auburn’s forum at the time…and she had previously dismissed Bama for exactly the same things that Auburn has (football and a popular Greek system). So, my comments may appear out of context.

I was suggesting that she tour Bama so she can see that schools that have football are still serious schools (again, I posted that when the thread wasn’t in the Auburn forum.)

Yes, Auburn has the Villages, but there’s not many beds. This has been misleading to prospective families. My own neighbor was very upset to learn that her D didn’t end up there when that is what was pushed during the tour. After talking to housing, they learned that a good-sized number of the beds were for Greeks, and the rest were for NMFs.

Anyway, yes, Auburn is a fine school. And, I agree, housing isn’t the end all, be all. However, the OP is asking about Housing…

Glad to hear that things have worked out for your child. That’s what’s important.

Call Auburn Housing and ask questions. They are very helpful. Talk to students who live in each area when you visit.

DS is not greek or NMF. He is honors student and did get his housing deposit in early - and he did get the village. Auburn was very clear on our tour about housing and we knew he might be in one of the other areas. We now know lots of Auburn families and I am not aware of anyone who felt mislead by the university.
