Audition Experiences BFA Acting class of 2024

@mommyMT I heard that U Miami changed their BFA this year… they used to have separate Acting and MT, but now it’s comprehensive MT & Acting… I heard all this second hand, but something to check out

@crazytheatregoer i think that your experience with UT is a good sign. I will say this though…last year my daughter had a great MTP audition with them at LA unifieds. The director told her that he wanted to work with her which we thought meant she was a shoe-in. She later was wait-listed but did end up actually coming off the WL to get accepted, though she eventually chose another program. I know we’re talking about ATP and not MTP, but both programs see so many people that they may end up seeing other people that fit what they’re looking for, even though they liked you when they saw you. Just show them you are interested. Email them and thank them for the time they spent with you and tell them how much you enjoyed your audition and how much you want to go there. It can’t hurt and you will stand out to them. My daughter came off almost all her WL last year bc we kept in touch with all of them so they would remember her. It works!

Can you tell me where you heard this? We were really confused by the letter D received, and this explanation makes a lot of sense. TIA!

@WDWMom

U Miami combined the MT and Acting program this year. It is on their website.

My d sent in the prescreen (which was optional) but didn’t pass it. So we don’t have any further information on it.

@WDWMom what letter did your daughter receive, just out of curiosity? We haven’t received anything from Miami. My son missed the early decision so he is regular decision now. We still don’t know if he’s even been accepted to the university, let alone the BFA program.

Have Texas State BFA Acting priority hold calls begun?

Does Shenandoah do a priority hold email for BFA acting or only MT? And when are we supposed to be notified of decisions? Thanks!

Just in case anyone was wondering, we received word that Miami would be notifying both for RD university acceptance and BFA Theatre Arts acceptance mid-March. They are simultaneous acceptance notifications.

Does anyone know much about Azusa Pacific’s BFA Acting program? How is the school and the acting training in general? Recent ally got accepted there.

Does anyone know if UCONN sends separate acceptance letters to the University and then for the Drama Program? We got one but not clear if it is only an academic or not. Thank you

@JI2002

I don’t have any first-hand knowledge about Azusa Pacific but hope someone can help answer the question. They say they split their training about equally between stage and screen. They are 26 miles away from LA (I’m not sure how that equates though to travel time). Their student reels look good (I was able to find some on youtube). They require 63 credits in Acting and a maximum of 62 credits in General Education. There are theatre courses listed in the Gen eds. That is what I could find looking over their curriculum.

I can speak a little to Azuza Pacific’s location - it’s in a NE suburb of LA, nice location for a suburb but pretty far from “everything” for a college student. I know someone whose son went there (not for acting) and she liked it because they met him where he was academically. We live 15 miles from the school and it was never on my kid’s radar or any of her acting friends’ either for college so I was surprised to see it on a “best schools” list. I remain somewhat skeptical about that as they don’t seem to have graduated any working actors last I checked but I haven’t visited and I don’t know much, it could be a “hidden gem” that’s still developing its alumni base.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to do some more digging, and hopefully anyone else with any knowledge can pitch their thought

We also live near Azusa Pacific, and people in the program and generally do regional theatre work, some film/tv. It is also a religious school and has had controversy around their treatment of LGBTQ students and staff. Just a heads up. If you’re not from the area people may not know it can be quite conservative.

Azusa Pacific University

We have been on campus twice, once to audition and second to tour & shadow a BFA class. I’m unsure what my D’s thoughts are on the college at this point. It is the only college on her list that is exclusive of the LGBTQ (a legit concern)

  • Christian College – Conservative beliefs
  • Required chapel 3 times a week
  • Faith Contract (required at a lot of Christian colleges) - Faculty required to sign one; Students not required to sign one
  • You are able to Double Major if so desired with BFA
  • West and East Campus w/buses that goes between the two (1/4 mile apart from each other). West “newer” Campus – campus with theatre and all Theatre classes. East “older” Campus - Housing (3 residence halls and campus apartments)
  • BFA Acting for the Stage & Screen & BA Theater Arts 2019-2020 Season Productions Middletown - Blackbox; Little Women – Main Theatre; To Kill A Mockingbird – Main Theatre; New Works Festival - Blackbox; Studio 216 (4 One Acts at various professional theaters in LA); Senior Web Series; Sketch Comedy Series; BA Capstone; BFA Senior Industry Showcase in LA

Program looks solid.

SMU BFA audition
2 contrasting monologs
3 people in audition
30 minutes orientation
Then led into audition. DD said super nice
Decide if Theatre Studies or Acting and why questions?
Director worked with DD and asked for an adjustment for dramatic monolog

USC -BFA
A 30 minutes orientation parents and students with Dean. Reality check on their program being extremely competitive and prescriptive curriculum
No travel or semester abroad, no double major, no outside theatre or film accommodation if Cast. Emphasized - these are not your friends - they will be your competition. If not interested, go to B.A. when interviewed. DD talked to B.A. students and found they had been cast in lead roles over BFA’s. BFA’s guaranteed roles, but not leads so some shows are cast with both.

Group split into interview with Dean other half audition. Random split. Adjudicators very inspiring, tired towards the end of the day, but still engaged.

Beautiful campus .Suggest to audition early in the year as possible. I felt as a parent that they had their 20 BFA’s and wanted BA students. This is my opinion, but DD chose RD.

Fordham BFA

Lovely students, students give. Color sheets and called by groups. Given time and room for warm ups. 2 contrasting monologs. 2 professors in audition, very nice. Short and sweet.

Juilliard BFA

Students; MFA and BFA together, taken to practice room and warm ups with Juilliard teacher. DD said was worth the audition working with voice teacher. Audition 2 monologs contemporary and classical.

Post results and if not named dismissed right after audition.
BTW the students and parents are allowed to eat at the Rose building cafeteria where the Juilliard students eat.Seeing the students with the dancers and musicians across from Lincoln Center was a treat.

UT Austin BFA
Very quick audition. Rather chaotic sign in so arrive early. 2 short monologs and Director will ask for adjustments. Seniors talk prior to audition. Individuals and explain program. Housing is quite a topic at UT -Austin. On campus vs off, cohort and friendly. Different vibe than USC

Please message if need more info. BAL
2021.

Wow. USC said in an admissions session that fellow actors weren’t your friends but your competition? That sound you hear is my mind blowing.

About USC, that is very sad, and not at all the experience my S has had in his very well-known high school or BFA programs. Competition is a reality, in this industry and in performing arts schools. But everything I have seen about the peer experience looks like these very talented kids cheering each other on and grooving on their friends’ success. It doesn’t have to be awful, it really doesn’t.

Exactly @MomMimi ! I can’t imagine my kid getting through her BFA program without her circle of studio friends. They definitely are each other’s biggest fans and there’s no better support structure. Even when you’ve graduated, friends will matter - your friends are your starter “network” and the only people who really get what it is to put yourself out there each day. That attitude is just nuts, imo.

Yes, and half the room got excited and the other half looked deflated. So much I felt was for effect.
The curriculum for B.F.A. Is very prescriptive in that you must take it in the order they have otherwise you will fall behind. Not a lot of wiggle room, but the pay off is you come out ready to work. Showcases and up and coming directors with SAG waivers on campus. Also you receive 1 year post grad personal coaching and video taping for auditions.

So after the competitive aspects, the Dean spoke of the positives. My DD still chose B.F.A as first choice.
