Audition Question

This is probably a really weird question, but I’m going to go ahead and ask it.

A couple of the schools I am auditioning at say this before listing specific instrumental requirements:

“Those auditioning for the percussion department are expected to demonstrate superior ability in one of the six categories listed below and competency in three other areas.”

A lot of percussion studios seem to expect this- students can basically specialize in one area.

But some schools expect a very well rounded player, like this one:

“Percussionist are expected to demonstrate a high level of skill and experience in each of the three areas.”

My question is about this school:

“Applicants in percussion are expected to have facility in each of the following areas:”

Does this sound more like the first type of studio I mentioned or the second one? I’m sorry if this is stupid. I’m just really nervous for this audition, so I’m trying to get a better idea of what they’re looking for.

I’m reading it as more like the second, but as I know next to nothing about percussion, you should probably ask the school. Good luck!

From experience of DD’s friend, it really depends on the school. Ask them if in doubt but the more like a conservatory the more it seemed they wanted a high level of skill in multiple instruments without a real distinction between them. No matter where you are going, you should be demonstrating the highest level that you can play well. But if you are auditioning soon, stop worrying and just practice what you have so you can do the best you can. Treat it like a performance and play so the audience enjoys it.
