I noticed on the CMU website their Chicago auditions are the same dates as the Chicago Unifieds… It doesn’t mention location. Have they been at a different location (i.e. not the Palmer House) in the past?

CMU has been at the Palmer House - last year they and UMich were on the same floor of the hotel for their auditions.

Do you know how many students they took in their freshman Musical Theatre program this year and how many seniors graduated last year?

Thank you.

I believe there are 12 first year students in this year’s BFA MT class.

I believe that they graduated about 7 (I forget the exact number) students in the 2008 graduating BFA in MT class.

CMU did originally take 12 in the MT freshman class (8 guys and 4 girls). They do hold auditions though during the first week of school for actors who want to audition for the MT program. One more boy was moved over from acting. So now they have lucky number 13!

I can not remember either about how many graduates were MT from last year’s class but I think it may have been more like 5 or 6. I know there were only 2 MT ladies. This year’s senior MT class is just about double from last year’s. They have 11.

kaysmom, if I remember correctly, last year was also a special year in that CMU took an exceptionally small number of girls for MT due to exceptional situations, such as one girl who had been accepted the year before couldn’t come right away because she was involved in that Minnesota bridge accident and another who came but had to leave due to health reasons, and so on. I think there was discussion about this on this board somewhere, if people want to search around for it. Of course, that only applied to this year’s freshmen class. I would imagine that other than the one girl who has already been accepted from precollege for next year (Class of 2013), all spots are open.

does anybody know how many students they put in each audition slot…?

By each slot, do you mean the time period when they tell you to come? The answer is: A LOT! Maybe 50.

Agree with the estimate above.

Most days they have a 9am and 1pm slot, so just wondering how much they fill those.

There must have been between 50 and 60 kids (most of them, young women) who were assigned to my daughter’s timeslot at CMU, which was the 1 p.m. timeframe. Once you got there, you checked in and they had each person come up to the table in the front of the room and have his or her photo done (Polaroid). After that and some introductory remarks by faculty, they called out the names of the group who were going to dance first and let them go get dressed, and then began to call the kids who were to sing and act. Then the groups switched.

CMU auditions A LOT of kids, so it makes sense that each audition slot on each day is filled. Be prepared to be there for awhile.

At my daughter’s audition, I heard quite a few parents complaining about how the thing was organized, but we honestly thought it was fine and what we expected. (For instance, I didn’t expect schools to provide parents and kids with free coffee, water, etc., though it was amazingly nice when schools such as Michigan and BoCo did so!)

Just came across this great site and as a dad of a 4th year CMU MT D can maybe add a bit more perspective. I believe this years 1st yr class had 11 kids selected and 1 added from acting program plus 1 girl who started in last years class but was unable to finish the year and is repeating. That means last years audition class = 3 girls and 8 guys.

This years 4th year class also started with 11 - 3 girls and 8 guys. 9 of the original 11 remain and they have added 2 girls and 1 guy who originally started in the class of '08 making a rare situation where more will graduate than started in this class originally.

This partly explains last years smaller class of 2 girls and 4 guys who graduated. (one guy left school in Dec "07 for a role in South Pacific on Broadway but did still graduate)

In the last 5 years class size has been 11-12 admitted from audition season and it seems always more guys than girls (3-5 girls most years).

I’m sure these figures have been discussed before and I think they are representative of what to expect in the next 1-2 rounds of audition seasons. The new Dept. head when selected may have different ideas but that is for the future along with the political state of the nation and the economy.

hello!
i registered for the november 9th 1:00 audition but have not heard anything from the department since my original confirmation when i registered over a month ago. should i call to confirm, or should i expect an e-mail?
thank you!

we have the morning slot for that day and have only rec’d the original email, so I would assume you should just show up (but bring a copy of your confirmation).

You just bring a copy of your electronic confirmation.
