This may be to broad of a question but could someone please help. My d will be auditioning for a summer program at OCU in about 3 weeks. One of her selections must be a pre 1970’s musical theater piece. She has a wide vocal range and would like suggestions. Can anyone provide some helpful feedback? Thanks.

You’re right, that’s pretty broad, especially since we don’t know anything about your daughter’s voice or physical type. To begin with, I would suggest that she stick to characters within a few years of her real age – that should narrow it down quite a bit. Depending on how mature she looks, her age range may even extend to characters in their early 20’s, but not beyond that.

The OCU summer program is fabulous! And one of the better priced ones out there. Don’t stress too much over your daughter’s audition - it can be fairly informal. The program takes in lots of kids and is often still advertising well into the spring. They just want to make sure your daughter has some talent and can sing so she can be a strong addition to the musical they produce. I might suggest songs from The Fantasticks, Fiddler on the Roof, Finian’s Rainbow, Brigadoon, Sound of Music or West Side Story. All of these have young women in them. You don’t need to worry with this audition if the songs are too familiar or overused like you do for college auditions. We filmed my daughter’s audition for the OCU summer program in a church with an accompanist on a home video recorder.

A website you might want to check out is this: [Stage Musicals 1960s - Part 1](Stage 1960s I: Soon It's Gonna Rain)

It’s just a list of a whole lot of musicals and the link is for the page of musicals produced in 1960, so fishing around on there could help!

Even better, check out the index of that same website [Musicals101.com’s Site Index](Musicals101.com's Site Contents) and start with “Stage: 1930s” and browse through to the 60s. It doesn’t list every single musical ever produced, but it sure is a good start!
