Audition

So, I’ve heard from a friend that MMC has like a group audition? How does this work? It must be really intimidating!

According to their website, they do the auditions as kind of a class - each student goes up and does their pieces in front of everybody and gets feedback and all. It’s definitely different, and probably designed to trip people up and see who can rise above the extra nervousness of having the eyes of your competitors/peers staring you down and making judgments as you audition. Definitely intimidating :/

I auditioned there this past year (and was accepted, if that makes any difference). It is a group audition. It’s very similar to a master class setup. If you’re really nervous about it I would suggest taking a master class ahead of time to help give you an idea of what to expect. Plus, maybe you could get some useful input on your audition song(s) that way!

Honestly though, the whole thing sounds a lot more intimidating than it really is. I was actually put more at ease in that environment. It’s reassuring to see other people audition because you see that no one is perfect and everyone’s audition has its bumps. When you don’t see other people’s auditions it’s easy to assume that they must be this flawless triple threat already ready to star on Broadway (especially the girls whose hair is still magnificent after the dance audition. Intimidation at its finest…)

Anyway, the program director and a voice specialist in the department were present. They gave a lot of constructive criticism and had most everyone try different techniques and approaches to their piece(s). A lot of it is aimed at assessing how well you take direction. Everyone you’re auditioning with is super supportive as well (at least, everyone fakes it well. We all know we’re secretly hoping that someone else goes a little flat). But really, it was a unique audition experience without a doubt, but it was also really pleasant. Just try to make the most out of it and don’t let the competition psych you out. Break legs!

Thank you so much, that was really helpful and also made me feel a little bit better!

Wow thanks a lot

I’m glad I could help!

@thekingsarms, I can’t tell from the website if you can only audition on campus specific dates. Can you answer that?

They do have specific audition dates on campus but they travel the country holding auditions in other states. My daughter also did not find the audition to be intimidating.

My daughter had an audition scheduled in San Francisco in January. If you schedule a regional audition, you have to pass a prescreen. Due to a snowstorm this winter, their flight was cancelled and they never made it to SF. They used her prescreen as her audition and she was waitlisted.
