Regarding choice of audition songs for a tenor; he’s got his heart set on “It must be so” from CANDIDE. Does this qualify as musical theater, operetta, or some nebulous in-between area? And how long does a song really have to be? This one’s kind of short. He’s nuts for Sondheim too but I think given the (oddly) hostile attitude towards his songs I’ve seen expressed on other forums, he’ll steer clear…

“It must be so” was one of my song choices about 4 years ago and it worked to my advantage. I sang both verses of the song, it’s short enough. If your S has his heart set on it he should definitely use it.
