Auditors' perspective of 2007 audition process

This past June doctorjohn and All4FSU both noted that they noticed some trends/shifts in last year’s audition/admissions experience. I noticed at least one school (BFA Acting, not MT) that didn’t do on campus call-backs in 2007 is doing this in 2008. I am guessing that the school felt it would be helpful to see the whole potential class for a second, more focused time. This made me think that might be because there are so many talented applicants and it’s getting harder to make decisions, but of course, that’s only speculation. Both doctorjohn and All4FSU offered to share their reflections after last year’s experiences, but I am not certain if either did or not. If anyone out there is in a position to share from the other side of the process, the side that forms the class, I would be very interested in that perspective. If I missed this and it already happened, please direct me to the appropriate thread. Thanks.

Hello,
I just saw this - I don’t have time for a long response, but I’ll jot down a few observations. I’m also happy to answer questions if you think of any. The thing that stands out most in my mind is that students are applying to a lot more schools. It has become the norm to see 10-12 schools on an applicant’s list and I don’t remember that from several years back; I would say average was more like 5-6. I also think that to some degree applicants are more prepared than they have been in the past. They know the process, the expectations and the competition. There are fewer applicants that audition “for the heck of it” to see what will happen. Because of the above, it IS hard to make decisions. For that reason, among others, FSU limits the number of audition appointments and every year for the last three years we have filled up earlier. That indicates to me that prospective students and their parents are much more organized. I think sites like CC play a huge role in this shift.

Another reason the number of schools students are applying to has an impact both sides (student and institution) is that successful auditionees are getting into more programs. It makes the month of May very interesting for all because that is likely when schools that utilize a wait/alternate list will extend offers. I have noticed more moving around the past couple of years.

Lastly (for now) I have noticed a lot more anxiety on the part of students about things like choice of material, resume, etc.

I have to run, but let me know if you have questions!
