Augustine of Hippo

Anyone read his ‘Confessions’? At first I was finding his breast-beating and ‘woe-is-me’ routine a bit tedious, but the more I get into it, the more I’m finding that his thoughts, his intense longing, resonates with me and what I’ve been thinking and feeling for awhile now. And I don’t think it’s just the reservoir of Catholic guilt I’ve accumulated over the past twenty years, either. Am I the only person around here who seems to be finding more in common with a 4th century North African pagan-turned Christian theologian than the people playing Guitar Hero down the hallway? What’s wrong with me?

hmmmm… maybe this would get more of a response at the University of Chicago forum?

haha Augustine DID significantly influence people’s beliefs along the lines of history - that you seem to agree with him could just be a result of your being cultured in a society that has been significantly influenced by the writings of St. Augustine.

I think St. Augustine once said something about not interpreting the bible too literally - Francis Collins used that as his way to reconcile evolution and Christianity

Yeah, flipping through the UChicago course catalog, there are at least two separate courses on Augustine’s Confessions.
