Recently got an offer to ANU to start second semester 2011. But I’m American, so I’m trying to learn a bit more.

@20509591: You’ll sit the test at the int’l school in City Beach if you’re in Perth. Contact the consulate or visit their St. George’s Trc office. :)

@carpe-diem - ended up doing the october ACT in city beach :D

thanks for the help though

Hello all,
I see that there are tons of aussies going to the states, but ergh, I’m quite the opposite. I would really love transferring to a uni in Australia, perhaps UniMelb or Usyd. ANU is way to expensive. I understand the Australian uni system. Depth-focused rather than lib arts like in colleges in the US. I’m confident in that regards; however, I am quite confused about transferring to a uni in Australia.

I’m an undergrad @ UC Davis, which is quite good in the US; however, considering the global rankings, Davis falls short, really short. I am currently double majoring in econ/IR. I’ve taken 10 APs, mostly 5s, and therefore, I can’t take those corresponding classes in college. How would that transfer in a uni in Australia?

Btw, if there’s any questions about studying in the United States, I’d love to answer!

I’m from Melbourne :)

I’m pretty new here and not too sure of the process to get into a college in the US, but does anyone body know of any institutions which offer SAT prep. classes or something similar in Melbourne? I’ve tried searching for some on the internet, but I couldn’t seem to get any. Also, I’m also in Year 11 (just finishing and starting Year 12 in 2011) so I’m looking at doing an undergrad. course at hopefully an Ivy League college.

Also, to the people in America looking to come to Australia, check with your College/Uni to see if they are partnered or affiliated with another Uni in Australia as they’ll most likely have all the necessary paper work ready and an established process of going on exchange/transferring to that Uni.

Issue35: try the Usyd or UMelb website. There should be information for transfer students. I’m not familiar with the layout of their sites but it’s under “Admissions” on the ANU website.

Adam0302, I’ll try and answer your questions - I’m an ANU student ![]()

Glad there’s an Aussie thread here. I’m from Canberra…haha, going on exchange to UCB in 2011. I’m so excited! Does anyone know about mobile/cell phone plans in the US? I hear most of them are 24 or 12month plans, but I’m only going to be there for 6 months…

Issue35: ANU shouldn’t be more expensive than USyd or UniMelb. Some of the colleges (such as Fenner and Burton and Garran), are self catering, so board there “only” costs about 7 grand a year. On the other hand, my cousin’s staying at a college at UniMelb which costs about 18,000 a year, so… ANU would be the best for international relations, but UNSW’s also pretty good for economics.

azielg, there’s no SAT prep in Melbourne. I did no preparation except the online practice test for my SAT 1… and I heard that colleges know that Australian students need to focus on VCE and other things instead of SAT preparation.

schrodingerscat: Did you prepare for it for an extended period of time (6-12 months) or did you did just complete a few practice tests and then go straight to the actual exam?

I did basically no preparation. I did the online test and did super well, but stuffed up on the day (well, still above the median for where I’m applying, but not what I wanted). I couldn’t do lots of preparation, because I only decided to apply in the middle of my VCE… and my parents stressed that VCE was the priority. I think that for an Australian applicant, there are more important things to look at than the SAT though… it’s not really in our cultural context.

Hi. I am so happy that I’ve found Aussies in Confidential :), though I’m not Australian. But I’m studying in Melbourne and has just finished year 11. It’s my first year in Aus and my mother tongue is not English, so handling some vce subjects like history and english is quite tough. But I’ve always wanted to study uni in US, so I start preparing SAT, TOEFL and stuff now.

I have a question.

All us universities require your school report, particularly GPA. But AUs doesn’t have GPA, so what do unis look at? our ENTER score? our marks for all exams in year 11 and year 12? My school has tests every week, so I’m not even sure which ones are recorded, which are not :< (except SACs)

Thank you :)

Hey guys, I’m from Sydney and I’ve applied for the above. Anyone else? I’ve pretty much got no chance of getting into Columbia but I’m really crossing my fingers for a place at UC. Any other nervous Australians here?

@maimu293 - its true australian schools don’t do GPA but you would usually just send your school transcripts with whatever grade system your school uses (mine just did number out of 100) and the universities usually have a system in place to compare it with US applicants. Good luck!

@rachell00 - did you apply to Barnard too? (I’m assuming your a girl) or just Columbia?
UChicago is a good school
too though. I hate it when people are solely focussed on the Ivy Leauge.

Also I am trying to set up some tutoring for the SATs.
I live in Sydney and I got improves from a 1910 on my first try to a 2210 on my last try purely by self studying
I also did the French, Mathematics Level II and Chemistry Subject tests in 2008. I’m more than happy to tell you my exact scores if you PM me.

I know there isn’t a lot to offer in this land down under. So I want to help expand that - I guess this is for the class of 2016 (college wise) more, like for those applying for Fall 2012. PM me for more info ![]()
Oh yeah I got into UCLA and USC but ended up choosing to study med at an australian university - didn’t want to deal with pre-med, or rather pre-meds haha.

does anyone know whether a lot of james ruse people apply to us schools?

Hello everyone, I am an IB diploma student at an international school in Belgium and I was wondering whether any of you are applying to the University of Melbourne. On the application form, there are a number of dates saying when you can start your course, and these dates include January, May, July, September.

If I want to start my course immediately after I get my IB results in July, is September the earliest possible time I can start my course? Or is the application period for September before July? When do I need to apply?

they probably have a couple every year
i mean thinking of their calibre
most of the kids I know that apply from here though went to private schools

do you know of any particular time period during which I might apply to U of Melbourne? Because right now, applications are open only for the March and June sessions, I believe. I want to get in during September. Is that even possible? Or do all courses begin in January?

sorry that was too the person above you
umm I dunno
I would contact the school
I think it depends on the course
I mean if you want to do an Arts degree its probably more likely.
I like know with Med which is what I am doing although not at Melbourne you can only start at the begining of the year like in March

i want to do chemical engineering. so is it possible? thanks for your response.

I hate to say it but probably not
def check with the school though
emailing I think is your best bet
