Austin suggestions

In Austin until Mon night. Anything I shouldn’t miss/need to see? Going to see Bill Clinton/James Patterson tomorrow night at UT Austin. Any other suggestions?

We really enjoyed the LBJ Presidential Library. Raney Street has some funky bars and restaurants. Very busy after dark. We also enjoyed biking around Lady Bird Lake. And June’s All Day was great. It was featured on The Today Show the day before my cousin’s joined us in Austin and so we all decided to go. It’s on the other side of Congress Street bridge from downtown. Had great meal and it was reasonably priced.

And if you get the chance you need to watch the bats take off from under that bridge. Google and you will find where it is, where to watch (we watched from our hotel’s roof bar) and time expected for them to fly out.

I second the suggestion for the LBJ Library. The Harry Ransom Center, also on the UT campus, has interesting exhibits and is free. If you have a car and want some of the best BBQ, I highly recommend The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood about 30 minutes outside of Austin. Note that it is cash only.

Fewer bats flying from under the Congress Ave bridge this late in the season. We enjoyed an evening Segway tour of the downtown area and the bridge a few years back, but it was earlier in the season. Segways might still be fun.

I’ve recently discovered Deep Eddy vodka, and I think it’s made in or near Austin. It may be too off the beaten path for a short trip, but I’d like to go to Austin, and it would be fun to visit.

Do you like to swim? I was intrigued by the spring fed pool downtown. I think it is Barton Springs pool. We had a great time just walking for miles around there, in the off leash dog area and further upstream. There are boats to rent too that you can take out right downtown.

Well I live in Austin, and honestly it is so hot right now I would not do any outdoor activities.

The Blanton Museum of Art is worth a visit. Not sure if they have any special exhibitions right now, but their regular collection is lovely.

Bob Bullock history museum is lots of fun.

We enjoyed the free guided tour of the Texas capitol. Take a guided tour otherwise you’ll miss things.

If you get a chance go to the Oasis to eat. Beautiful view. The County Line on Bee Cave road is another good BBQ place but the Salt Lick is awesome too!

There are some really cool biking and hiking trails around Lady Bird Lake. Very, very nice… The Driskill is a beautiful old hotel, circa 1850. The architecture of the building is worth the trip! It’s only a few blocks from the capitol. Have a drink there and ‘listen’ to the history–lots of deals have been made there over the years… Legend has it LBJ took Lady Bird to the Driskill on their first date. Scholz Beer Garten is another popular watering hole with personality. Don’t miss a touring the capitol and don’t miss the LBJ Library.
