Austin, Texas vacation..questions!

Hubbie and I will be taking a 3 night vacation to see our son and his GF. They only lived there 6 months before the pandemic. We will be fully vaccinated and are comfortable to travel.

Although they know a lot of restaurants, he asked me if there were any I’d like to go to, I know I want to go to the Diskill (sp) Hotel fir a drink, and maybe Oasis one night. Any suggestions of places downtown that are a cross between laidback and real upscale? Trendy, nicer?

We are thinking of dong the double decker Hoho bus if it’s open by then. Any other suggestions of what may be nice to see. We won’t be doing any hiking, etc.

Thanks!

Check out The Roosevelt Room and don’t forget to see the bats on the bridge!

The Driskill would be nice for a drink. The Oasis is more for the view and the ambiance than for the food, though it’s been a few years since I’ve been there.

There is a really nice little seafood place (ha ha, yes, in Austin) that is good for either lunch or dinner. It’s on 6th street (a bit down from the bar scene) I think. I’ll try to remember the name.

Of course, with COVID, there may be restaurants that have gone out of business.

@MaineLonghorn will have some ideas!

I haven’t been to Austin in a year. Hope to go in September. I think the food is better at the Oasis than it used to be. I really enjoy going there. I also like County Line on the Hill - good barbeque and a nice view. It’s not downtown, though. If you can get to Mount Bonnell, it’s very scenic. Also, the Loop 360 Bridge is gorgeous. If you can drive through Westlake Hills, you will see a lot of beautiful homes (and it is VERY hilly - I love taking non-Texans there, ha). My parents live on the edge of Westlake Hills. (Last week, I was told that there were 13 properties for sale in Westlake, all over $2 million. My parents bought their house lot in 1972 for $5,000.)

I’m not sure if Barton Springs will be open for swimming, but it’s beautiful - a 1,000-foot long pool fed by springs. I spent most of my middle school years there.

6th Street is fun, although I’m not sure what’s open due to COVID. I like going to Antoine’s.

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower center is cool. So is the Bullock Texas State History Museum. I love going to the state Capitol, too.

OK, I’m homesick now.

I remembered the name of the little seafood place:

Clark’s Oyster Bar. I’d get a reservation if you decide to go.

Glad to hear Oasis food has improved, though I would still go even if it hadn’t. Spectacular views!

So have not been there in the last year. Chuy’s is the original tex mex 1982 one near Zilker park we loved. Umlauf sculpture garden and museum nearby is fun, too. Don’t know downtown very much except the very cool and modern library with eating area on top outside was cool, too.

Oh, yes, how could I forget the new library?? It is awesome.

Here are all great recommendations! Thank you. Will research them.

I agree about the County Line. It also has locations in Albuquerque and El Paso (The State Line).

They have the best steaks if you don’t like barbecue!

Thing I remember most from Austin was throwing axes! Not the safest thing to do but very empowering!

I just came back from Austin. I really liked this restaurant. It is Asian fusion, excellent food and very good ambiance. They also have outdoor dining, which is not that common in TX.

Salty Sow is good for dinner. Very Austin. Second the Bob Bullock History Museum. Walk down South Congress and get Amy’s Ice Cream and consider Hop Doddy’s for an upscale burger. Stroll the hike and bike around Lady Bird Lake and lunch at the new downtown library.
