Australian student: Recommendation from Drama teacher?

Hi, I’m an Australian student, new to CC, and applying later this year. I had a question about the LOR from my two teachers. I take drama as a subject and over here, it’s not like an out of class activity or club. The subject involves a lot of theory and writing and there are as many hours/week in Drama class as any other subject. Drama marks are weighted the same as marks from maths, english or science and contribute equally to my high school report and transcript.

I’ve already asked my drama teacher, who is also a deputy principal, to write me a recommendation, and it wasn’t until a few days ago that I suddenly realised, hang on, drama might not be seen as an ‘academic’ subject in the US. I know that her recommendation would be very favourable and will attest to my personality, strengths etc, but now I’m worried that submitting a recommendation from a drama teacher might not meet Yale’s requirements. My other recommendation is from my English teacher.

So is this the case? Or would it be ok, given the context?

Thanks so much

here LOR should be your 3rd, supplemental LOR. You should get another LOR from a core academic class (in addition to your Engl teacher).

As for attestations about “personality and strengths” – it’s likely to be too bland. You want anecdotes. See this:

Hi, fellow Australian applicant here (albeit in a few years), from what I gather, it would not be a good idea to send an elite Ivy League university such as Yale a recommendation from a drama teacher, as it might not be regarded as an academic subject. Unless you are planning to study drama or some major related to the arts in college, you’re probably better off going with a recommendation letter from a math/science teacher, otherwise a supervisor from part time work or community service projects (if applicable).
