Auto Insurance for first time car buyer

Any suggestions? My 23 year old son just purchased (well he leased) his first car. It is a new vehicle. He has to get some insurance quotes but there are so many companies. I know he can go to a quote site and get multiple quotes at the same time. I have worked in the insurance industry and I know that there is a big difference between companies. Just curious if anyone either loves or hates their insurer. Or maybe some of you have recently had a recent college grad just buy their first car and have been through this. Any opinions are appreciated.

Had a good quote from USAAIf your S qualifies. That is who insures D. S used estranged, via online quote. We have local insurer (Island Insurance) who is way cheaper than national chains, but have perfect driving records. See if he can get good student and good driver discount. Mercury insurance was fairly reasonable for our S in CA. If you specify the state, it might provide you with more answers, as some insurers have smaller areas they cover.

Can he stay on your insurance and pay you? I’m still on my parents’ insurance even though I bought my car (a year old at the time) and it’s in my name because the difference in insurance between their policy and my own policy was over $1,000

He should have gotten insurance pricing on different possible vehicles before deciding which one to buy.

In any case, he can go to each insurance company’s web site and use the quote tool.

Amica. We have used them for years.

Sorry! S used esurance–spellcheck changed it.

If you keep S on your family policy, all policies can go up if any of you has any accidents or tickets. Also, if you all live in different geographic areas it may not be possible. It’s worth checking into.

D is in a different state so she couldn’t stay on our policy. We’re happy with our insurance (Farmers), so I called our agent and asked her for an agent in D’s town. Before I passed the number along to D, I called the agent and told her what I wanted – coverage levels, roadside assistance, etc. I wanted to make sure she had more than bare-bones coverage. So when D went in, it was easy-peasy.

While she was there, she also got renter’s insurance and got a small discount.

Yes, I have a significant policy for D, just for my peace of mind.

DD just bought a car. We have USAA and it was the same price whether she stayed on our policy or go her own I thought that was odd, but we asked the several times and ran the online calculator with the same results…

Wow. You are lucky, cap. Both my s’s went up a but because we lost the family discount.

I switched to Progressive last year and they have been really good so far. Even after BarnardGirl had an accident, the rates didn’t go up. In fact, they ended up going down some. I’m glad she plans to stay in NYC and won’t need a car.

Sorry, typo above, as usual. My s’s went up a * bit * because we lost the family discount for them.

That’s good news! We have USAA, too. S drives DH’s old car and pays us the $34 a month for the insurance. The overall insurance cost for the family actually went down–S lives in VA, so he was taken off coverage for our other two cars. He’ll be getting his own policy when he graduates in May because we’re giving him the car.

Our kid has Progressive. We were eligible for USAA but they were not cost competitive at all. Our insurance company would NOT allow us to continue this kiddo on our policy with a car in HIS name not ours.

Actually, his portion of the policy was cheaper by himself than as part of our plan. But DS had an older model car.

My daughter kept State Farm when she moved to another state. They let her keep her good student discount. Her rates are pretty high, but she’s 23 and has a brand new SUV, plus moved to NY where the rates are higher anyway.

State Farm has been REALLY good to us. We had two very expensive accidents and one minor motorcycle accident in a 7 month or so period. They gave us accident forgiveness for all of them and our rates did not go up at all.

We have had to shop around a lot lately. For a while we were in good shape because my fiance was the only person named on the title of my car, and I barely drive my car, so we were able to insure it as his secondary car and I didn’t need to be named on the policy. When we bought my new car I wanted to be able to use my family’s discount so I had to go on the title, so now we are insuring my car as my primary car and I am named on the policy and our insurance shot through the roof because I am under 25 and had never been on my own policy before-- nobody cared about the years I was rated on my parents’ policy. We shopped around and Geico gave us the best rate (state farm, where we were, was highest) but it is still really high, but they told us to shop around again in 6 months when I will be 25, we’ll be married, and I’ll have been named on a policy for 6 months. Neither of us have had any accidents or tickets, so I am hoping the price comes down in 6 months. Our insurance more than doubled.

I was pretty annoyed because the whole reason we bought my new car was to get rid of fiance’s sports car that cost a small fortune to insure, but as it turns out insuring me in a normal car is more expensive than insuring him in a sports car. :(

If possible try to get a policy with accident forgiveness for only a small premium (like $5-10 per 6-12 months). It helps, because accidents CAN happen.

Get a copy of your credit report to make sure there are no errors or wrong entries in your credit history. Most insurance companies factor in your credit for rating and underwriting. Poor credit can mean more expensive auto insurance.
