Anyone ever ship a car cross country? (by truck or by a driver)? Your experience or advice? Cost, and was it worth it?
We’ve shipped 2 cars from HI to CA via closed container using Pasha. They did a decent job and the cars arrived intact. S shipped a car from SF to DC (by truck) but doesn’t recommend. He didn’t provide details but the car DID arrive and he is driving it. Since the vehicles were 100% paid for older cars, the main cost was the shipping and for us, it was worth shipping all the vehicles we shipped.
When S had to take his car across the country, he got a friend to take a week and drive out with him. We paid for all lodgings (arranged in advance) and for the friend’s plane ticket home. When he returned, we sent a different friend to make the return trip with him. S has seen a lot of the country.
S and D did drive from CA to Washington DC once in a car that S wanted in DC. His employer paid for lodging and some per diem. They took their time and mostly enjoyed the trip. The other time, he needed the car and shipping it was the fastest and easiest way for him to get it from SF to DC. He didn’t want to take vacation time to drive the vehicle across the country.
I haven’t shipped a car, but it’s pretty common for racing sailors to ship their boats around; the ones that don’t have a relationship with a particular carrier have had good luck with going through UShip. I’d see what quotes UShip turned up.
What type of car is it and where are you moving it from/to?
…and companies worth researching if you don’t mind posting (or PM). Thanks!
Our daughter’s car was totaled, and she was in med school and very busy, so we sent a car by truck from the Denver area to the Atlanta area in 2016. We contacted a company called Montway, which we found on the internet. They served as a broker with another company called Avalanche Tran. Total cost was $679. It took about five days to arrive, and everything went as planned. Logistically, they came with a small car carrier and picked the car up at our house. Then they combined our car with several others on a large car carrier. Since my daughter’s condo complex was a little tight for unloading the car, they met her in a nearby parking lot. We were so glad we did it this way. It was well worth the cost not to have to take the time to drive across country and pay for hotels, gas, and air fare back.
3x my son’s car went from CA to MA and back again. It took a week to 10 days. No problems, but costs between $1200-1600. The highest price was paid them hisband of a co-worker, but no better service. Often, he had to drive or pick up from a designated spot.
we shipped a car 5.5 yrs ago from seattle to the midwest. It turned out fine; i think it was around 8-900$. I dont remember much about it, but that there are lots of places online to read about it and see reviews; and there were brokers and then there were companies that just did it themselves. We could see the car moving and where it was at all times. Our neighbor Loves car and has them shipped to him often; i’ve noticed it’s always different companies.
We shipped a car from Philadelphia to the SF Bay Area about 5 years ago. Sounds very similar to the price and experience @bgbg4us had. It went very smoothly. We used Cascade Vehicle Shipping.
Last year we shipped a car from Boston to San Francisco. We filled out an online quote generator that resulted in us being contacted by scores of auto transporters, all claiming to be the best and cheapest, but basically all being cut from the same cloth, that is, fast talking, lying, salespeople. It turns out they’re all just brokers who post their customer leads on some site where the actual shippers bid on the jobs and the brokers keep as large a cut as possible. As I recall, we ended up paying about $1000-1200.
OP, search on here and you will find a number of threads on this.
What @sherpa said was our experience. We did twice. My suggestion would be to set up separate email account before you fill out any online quote.
Thanks gosmom. I did a search but most threads found were quite old by now. However, some of the same companies came up, so I’ll start there.
Not me however my cousin has a super experience of transporting 2 cars with the help of a proper automobile transport team. He recently shipped his second automobile by contacting the group about which he got to know through an [official source](http://connecticutautotransporter.com/bristol-car-transport/). His experience changed into an absolutely pleasant one and as I am additionally going to transport my new purchase to every other city, he’s referring me to rent them for the secure and worth hiring service. I am hoping that all goes virtually well.
