Auto Transport from Florida

I don’t know if this has been asked before, but we are looking into shipping a car from Florida up north. I read some comments from people on review sites and nearly everyone talks about horror stories with auto transport companies. I recognize that dissatisfied people are more likely to write reviews than those who have had good experiences (such as on the college review sites),but I’d like to know if anyone has had a good experience with long distance transport of an automobile?

bump

Anyone?

I know you posted this a while ago, but did you ever ship your car? We, too, would like to ship a car from FL to NY, but so wary of the transport companies. Is there another thread on this somewhere or are we the only 2 who want to do this???!!!

My inlaws travel to FL every winter by train with their car. I believe they board somewhere in Virginia, but am not sure where they disembark in FL. Can’t be too pricey…try searching Amtrak.

First thing, do you want open or enclosed trailer? Enclosed costs roughly double an open trailer. I moved a collector car and used a firm that I believe is the best in the business, Horseless Carriage. They were actually reasonably priced, prompt, professional, and treated my car like gold. My insurance company also highly recommended Fedex. Apparently they ship cars also.

As it turned out, my father-in-law decided to give up driving so we didn’t need to ship his car up here when he moved here. But if he had wanted to bring it, we were going to pay the interstate moving company which moved his furniture. They said that their trucks are big enough to bring a car along – for a price.

Are you planning to travel with the car? As archiemom mentioned above, the car train between Virginia and Florida is very popular.

I know someone who used Horseless Carriage too, from California. My mom, many years ago, and my in laws, not so many but a few years ago, both used the auto train out of virginia. It leaves from somewhere about an hour from DC, and arrives in florida in Sanford, I believe.

Thanks everyone. I know about auto train, but it only goes from Sanford, FL to Lorton, VA (I think). I will look into Fedex (which is surprising!) and Horseless Carriage. No, we were not going to travel with the car. Just want to get to to my son. We are also considering driving ourselves, but it is a 21 hour drive–makes for a long weekend!
