Autobiography - Page 179?

For Concord Academy’s essay this is one of the options: write page 179 of your autobiography. Should I talk about the past, present, or future? It isn’t really clear.

Looks like you picked an easy prompt, you can leave it blank if your autobiography only contains 178 pages. :D

It kinda depends on who you are, doesn’t it? I mean, if you’re some amazingly famous child star who’s traveled around the world a dozen times before the age of 12, page 179 of your autobiography might be stuff that happened five years ago! On the other hand, if your greatest adventures are still ahead of you, page 179 might not happen for years . . . get it?

So, figure out (for purposes of this fictitious autobiography, anyway) what you want to do in life and where you expect to be at age 20, 30, 40, and so on. Then figure out how much of that stuff you might already have written before you get to page 179. That page could be anything from the day you graduate from high school to the day you’re elected president . . . after all, you’re the one making it up!

I were an applicant, it would take every fiber of my being not to turn in a blank page with a sticky note that says, “Tragically, I died young.”

Definitely not present. Because either this is a current autobiography (in which case what are the chances that your book is exactly 179 pages and discuss the present at the end) or a future autobiography (in which case what are the chances you end up hitting the present at page 179).

I always preferred the future interpretation. It leaves a lot of room for creativity. I wrote mine not about being president, but losing a presidential primary race I didn’t have a shot in. It was an ironic piece, and I thought it played well. Too bad I’ll never know if it would have worked, because I wrote it for fun after I applied to colleges.

if page 179 is out of a 500 page book, you would just be getting to the Pulitzer prize award or was it the olympic games? :D

Page 179 can be a picture of you relaxing on a beach with a note saying I started a company like google after high school and retired early! :D

Or a photo of a federal prison…

I don’t get this prompt, can someone clarify what page 179 is? This is like a blonde moment for me

OMG! really?

That’s one of those “original” prompts that’ve been used inside and out. With varying page #, of course. ;)

Good luck!

Chuppybn,
Pick up someone else’s autobiography and flip to page 179. What does it say? Now think. If this were your autobiography what would you have written about yourself? What part of your life would the reader be learning about when they reached page 179 of the story of your life?

Example:
pg. 179, “Chuppybn, an American Icon”
…over Istanbul. President Gaga seemed flustered as she extended her hand. “If it weren’t for you, Chuppybn,” she stammered, “I wouldn’t be where I am today”. I…

(and obviously you need to write a full page) :-)

Thanks for explaining, i never heard of it before, probably since i dont read autobiographies

Thanks everyone for responding. I’ll definitely do the future then…I have some pretty lofty goals!
