I submitted my application on Feb. 1st?
Due to the rolling nature and increasing popularity of UMAA, I was wondering that I might be automatically rejected simply because there are not enough spots.
Any ideas about that?

Not automatically rejected by any means, but your stats will have to be substantially higher than those who were admitted in, say, november.

By mid-january they had already admitted 70% of the applicant pool, so you’re basically competing for <30% of the spots.

Where did you get that info? Is it new for this year?

“By mid-january they had already admitted 70% of the applicant pool, so you’re basically competing for <30% of the spots.”

Well, isn’t it true that less people apply late though?

GoBlue: I have a friend in the office of admissions :). Yes, it is current as of this year (due to the new EA policy). Those number might be a few % off, but pretty close to correct.

awesome: can’t answer that, but many of the later applicants have re-taken tests, etc., so their scores tend to be higher anyway, and thus possibly more competitive. Earlier admits tend to have a higher GPA, later ones a higher SAT/ACT according to my friend in O of A. But again, that doesn’t take into essays and such, so you can’t really predict the outcome just by the stamp date.

also, when I said 70% of the applicant pool, I meant they had admitted 70% of their the frosh class, NOT had an acceptance rate of 70%. Sorry bout that :)

vc08,
I presume they have already processed all the ER applications by now. Do you know what % of the spots are taken by ER?

I understand that in previous years, the bulk of the applications came in after Dec 1.

Go Blue: I am not sure, but probably around 60-70%, because I asked my friend in mid-January, just after the ER decisions were finishing up. If 70% of the class was admitted by mid-end January, and most of them were ER applicants or people who applied very shortly after, then I would assume a large number of the class was admitted under ER. But I don’t have exact figures, other than the 70% thing. I’ll let you know if I find out anything more.

to the OP, its just general fact that its harder to get in the later you apply. Im not sure about vc08s numbers but last year a few of my friends with outstanding stats who applied in January got rejected, while this year a lot of my friends who are honestly not as qualified as those rejected last year got in because they applied ER. Thats the thing, applying early gives you the fairest/best shot at getting in without too many outside things affecting your app, but applying late just makes it more difficult to get in (ie. not enough spots, how you compare to the rest of the applicants, etc.)
