Average GPA for freshman and sopho. years but better GPA during my junior year? Chances?

Hi everyone!

As I’m nearing the end of my high school experience, I’ve been worrying about my 9-10th grade GPA’s and how it will affect my chances of getting into Pratt, NYU, Reeds, and or Columbia.

Both my 9-10th grade GPA’s came to around 3.2-3.3 if I can remember correctly. Currently, in my junior year, I assume I’m closer to a 4.0 as I’m taking AP Eng-Lang and generally doing better in my maths courses. Do you guys believe that I could get in to a college with a 30% acceptance rate with those varying GPA’s? Thank you!

No. I believe they are out of reach because it appears you are an International student with grades much to low for those colleges.

I’m actually not an international student. I’m from Hawaii.

I assumed you were by saying “maths”. Either way I think you have literally no chance

Well, for starters, Columbia University doesn’t have ~30% acceptance rate, but has ~5% acceptance rate. For this, I absolutely agree with the previous post, that “you have literally no chance” due to your poor GPA.

Likewise, Reeds and NYU will be significant reach schools for you due to your freshman and sophomore GPAs. Certainly, colleges look at and love GPA improvements; however, those first two grades are too low to balance out. Also, if you were talking about weighted GPA of 4.0, then it’s a worse story because still being below 4.0 won’t make you shine against other competitive applicants.

I suggest just applying to Pratt, as it has higher acceptance rate (50%) than you think, although it is a reach school.

Don’t forget that GPA is not the only factor evaluated, but many others are evaluated too.

What’s your overall gpa both weighted and unweighted? Also what about your test scores and extracurriculars??
