What is the average household income of Carleton students? Is there an atmosphere of classism (intentional or unintentional) at all at Carleton?

Aren’t you a student there? What is your perception?

The average income of Carleton students themselves is probably very low. The OP is probably asking the more relevant question about their family incomes.

This table shows the family income (AGI) of those families who applied for Carleton’s need based aid.
[Carleton College: Student Financial Services: Aid Awarded to 2011-2012 New Students](http://apps.carleton.edu/campus/sfs/prospective/aid_chart/)
This represents about 58% of the entering class. It is probably not a representative sample: it is likely that families who did not apply for financial aid had higher incomes, on average, than those who did apply. But this is the only data I could find.

What this shows is that the median AGI of those who applied for financial aid at Carleton is probably about $115,000 per year. Probably about 40% of the families who applied for financial aid had incomes below $95,000, while about 40% of the families who applied for financial aid had incomes above $175,000.

Of course $115,000 per year provides a very nice living in Manhattan, Kansas, and although it is something like twice the national average, it would provide a more difficult standard of living in Manhattan, New York City.

Once you are a student at Carleton, there are very few additional fees one has to pay. Events are covered. If you are on financial aid one can apply for financial assistance with music lessons. Cars that are allowed on campus are usually stored up at the Rec Center. So in answer to your question, “classism” is not as obvious as other campuses and it is definitely not part of the culture to show it.

I second what Pootie said. OP, you claim in other posts to be a senior at Carleton.

I believe the OP is a senior at Carleton. Perhaps he was just curious about the first question and wanted to start a discussion with the second.
