Average SAT score for Pitt?

Hey Guys!

I am a high school junior and just recently took my SAT’s. I didn’t study for them and I certainly paid for it by getting a score of a 1320. I know I will never get into Pitt with a score like that. I plan on taking them again in June and I’m going to study so hard, as this is my dream school! What should I shoot for to get? I know there is more to it than your SAT scores but that is mainly what I am focused on.
I also am going to apply to Pitt for Dental Hygiene if that makes any difference. I am having a hard time finding information on there Dental hygiene program from students.
Thank you so much!

Looks like you apply to the 2-year certificate program first, then after completion to the Baccalaureate degree program. Explore the webpage below (admission requirements are included, but does not say anything about how competitive admissions are)
[University of Pittsburgh - School of Dental Medicine](http://www.dental.pitt.edu/students/dental_hygiene.php)

Also note that admissions are rolling and they only admit 36 students per year, so applying in the fall is very important. First review of applicants is November 1!

We were told that the average SAT score for accepted Pitt students is 1330 for math and reading. You must also have a B+ GPA.

Oh, and that 1330 has gone up 80 points in the last five years!

I assume 1330 is Math + Reading only, right? (Not including Writing section)

Yes, that is correct.

To OP:
Why do you think 1320 is a low score ? You look good for Pitt. Focus on rest of your application like GPA, essays etc. There is no reason at all to take the SAT’s again unless you want to apply to other selective Universities.

Here is my experience. You need CR+M of 1450 and top 5% of your class for admission and mainly merit scholarship. That is this year’s stats. Anything less would be an iffy situation. So work hard and get the scores as high as you can.

2012-2013 (aka this freshman class) data set:

Average GPA: 3.93

SAT Score breakdown:

Math: >700: 21%
>600: 78% (600-699: 57%)
>500: 99% (500-599: 21%)

CR: >700: 14%
>600: 62% (600-699: 48%)
>500: 98% (500-599: 36%)

“You need CR+M of 1450 and top 5% of your class for admission and mainly merit scholarship.”

Too much exaggeration. 1450 and top 5% is for honors and merit.

Over 1250 SAT will get you admitted. Proved by AwesomeOpossum’s data above. ^

What do you think anghad meant by mainly merit scholarship in his/her post?
Would 1250 get the OP into the Dental Hygiene Program that supposedly only admits 36 students per year?

1250 might get some special circumstances applicants into some of Pitts less competitive programs, but I don’t believe one size fits all.

“What do you think anghad meant by mainly merit scholarship in his/her post?”

I guess you didn’t see the word admission.

3.93 GPA is weighted

^good point PDrake. Even the ivy’s don’t have 3.93 UW average.

I don’t see average UW GPA on Pitt common data set. Does anyone know ?

I guess you didn’t realize the word “and” in a sentence indicates a connection or addition especially of items within the same class or type ; used to join sentence elements of the same grammatical rank or function.

Without the word “and” connecting the poster’s opinion of SAT admission requirements with his/her opinion of mainly merit scholarship requirements then you might have a valid point.

A CR+M of 1450 and top 5% of your class is NOT necessary for admissions to most of Pitts programs. It probably is necessary for admission and mainly merit scholarship.

REALLY???

What is accomplished by being so rude to others?

^tell me about it.

Keep in mind that the lower the SAT/ACT score, the higher the rest of your stats must be.

i.e. low SAT + high GPA with lots of honors/APs

That way you’re showing you’re academically capable, you just don’t do well on standardized tests.

Agreed! Why would a poster characterize (incorrectly) another person’s attempt at being helpful as “too much exaggeration”? Ignorance or rudeness?

^LOL klfrech was talking about your personal attack if that wasn’t obvious.

“What is accomplished by being so rude to others?”

That question was directed towards you.

To get back, it looks like Pitt gives more priority to SAT than GPA. A person I know who had 1750 SAT and 3.8 UW GPA was rejected. R+M was around 1180, don’t know how many AP’s.
