Average to Good Student - Chances?

Okay, here’s the deal.

I currently attend a somewhat large competitive school in Michigan and am wondering what my chances are at a variety of schools across the country.

<stats>
GPA: 3.65 (unweighted)
AP’s: Four classes by the end of high school (all 4’s and 5’s on tests)
-AP US History
-AP US Gov
-AP English Lit
-AP Enviro Sci
-AP Eng Lang (self-study)
Honors: Two honor’s classes
ACT: 29
SAT: 1880
*Thing to note - our school follows a block schedule, so we take 4 classes a day for half a year and then switch the classes for the second part of the year. All AP’s (except Stat and Comp. Gov [havn’t taken]) run for the full year meaning they each take 2/8 class periods.</stats>

<ec’s>
Trip to New Orleans for a week for Hurricane Katrina Relief (8 hrs/day…6 days)
Varsity Cross Country (4 years)
Track (4 years)
LinkCrew Freshmen Orientation (2 years) - Lead groups of incoming freshmen for a four hour orientation and then advise them all year
Youth Council (2 years) - In charge of planning events for youth in the city and doing volunteer work for city
Fiddlers ReStrung (4 years)-nationally renowned fiddle group that has played all over the country…at the White House, Kentucky, Tennessee, Good Morning America and many other places
Recycling Club (2 years)</ec’s>

Schools that I am possibly looking at:
Kalamazoo College (in state)
Michigan State (in state)
Boston University
Tulane
Tufts
DePauw
UC-? (suggestion as to which one?)
Denison
Kenyon
Oberlin
Rice
Rhodes
Colorado College
UC - Boulder
Boston College
Indiana University
UNC - Chapel Hill
NYU

i appreciate your honesty. i’m not high strung and won’t mind if you give honest feedback, in fact I would like it much more than crap sugar coated feedback. if you have any other schools to reccomend feel free. thanks so much :)

Riverside, Merced, Santa Cruz - (don’t bother, not worth the out of state tuition)

Michigan State- match
Kalamazoo College- match
Rice- reach
UC - Boulder- match

With a higher GPA, you’d probably get into University of Michigan. Why not apply there?

Erm, you might want to narrow down that list before asking for chances.

Ya i don’t think you would want to pay that much for the low end UC’s.

Kalamazoo College (in state)
Michigan State (in state)-match
Boston University-match
Tulane-match
Tufts–reach
DePauw–match
UC-? (suggestion as to which one?)–go for Irvine, Santa Barbara or Davis (all matches OOS)–don’t try UC San Diego, (slight reach OOS) UCLA (reach OOS), or UC Berkeley (big reach OOS)
Denison–don’t know
Kenyon-match
Oberlin–match to slight reach
Rice–reach
Rhodes–match
Colorado College–match to slight reach
UC - Boulder–match
Boston College–slight reach to reach
Indiana University–match
UNC - Chapel Hill–match to slight reach (OOS)
NYU–match except for business or theatre or individualized study, then slight reach to reach

And like the one person said, Michigan is a match to slight reach (and one of your cheapest options).

the reason I did not list Michigan is because I have lived in Ann Arbor all of mylife and I’m ready to leave for a couple of years. While it seems to make sense economically, it’s not what I really want for college.

Hmmmm, I had a 3.63 GPA and a 29 ACT out of an Ann Arbor HS. I could give you some sort of outlook. I was accepted to Wisconsin, rejected at Michigan (although I applied to Kinesiology, much harder than LSA), accepted at MSU, accepted at Indiana with a 6000 scholarship per year, accepted at Miami (FL) and Syracuse.

MSU - accepted with MEAP money and MCS scholarship
Indiana - accepted with 6000 scholarship
Kalamazoo - accepted scholarship/aid
Boston - accepted with scholarship/aid
Tulane - accepted with scholarship/aid
DePauw - accepted with scholarship/aid
UC Boulder - accepted with scholarship

Rice - don’t even bother
UNC - same as Rice, admissions are impossible for OOS freshmen, transfer there if you want to go there
Tufts - Not impossible, but not likely. Reach.
Boston College/NYU - These are slight reaches. You may get into one, you may not.
UCs - You’re not getting into Berkeley, LA is like Tufts, unlikely but 2 kids who were in my classes last year did get in and enrolled. UCSD is similar to BC and NYU, not 100% sure, but possible, slight reach.

Sorry, not familar with the LACs. Couldn’t tell you about Denison, Kenyon, Oberlin, Rhodes, or CC without having to look up the info online.

So here’s what I have for you:

SUPER REACH (you’re wasting your money applying): UNC, Rice, UCB
REACH:Tufts, UCLA
SLIGHT REACH: BC, NYU, UCSD
MATCH (probably getting in, chance at merit money): Kalamazoo, BU, Tulane, Depauw, UCI, UCSB, UCD, UCSC
SAFETY (auto acceptance with scholarship): UC Boulder, MSU, Indiana

whoa!!! awsome :-)

runfast2007:

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach (out of state)
UCSD: Reach (out of state)
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Slight Reach (out of state)
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Match (out of state)
