Currently a Sophomore at an average high school in San Francisco. I'm aiming for either UCD, UCLA, UCB, or UCSD. My sister goes to Stanford, so it adds a lot of stress. I was wondering what is the average GPA (weighted and unweighted) and SAT score I should aim for. Right now, my GPA is EXTREMELY low at a 3.13 unweighted with 1 AP and 1 Honor and my PSAT score freshmen year was a 161 (1610 Average for SAT).

Remember that the UCs do not include your freshman year grades, and you probably don't have your sophomore first semester grades yet. As far as they are concerned, you are at the starting gate like everyone else, so don't give up. If you have finals after winter break, talk to all of your teachers tomorrow to find out what you should work on during vacation. Then study! Don't let your sister's success stress you out...ask her to tutor you when she's home for vacation. When you need a break, cruise the UC prospective student websites and get inspired.
One last thing: Check to make sure you are taking the right classes to be considered for admission to the UCs...it's all listed on the UC websites and your guidance counselor should have the list of the specific classes at your school that qualify.

Thanks so much! That helped! I keep thinking that since I have a terrible GPA now, there was no way to get accepted to a UC. I have to realize that its just the START. Thanks! Btw, I'm really close to my counselor at school, she helps me a LOT. And Winterbreak already started for me. =[ I guess my job now is just to study for finals right! THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I've been talking to my counselor lately and she says that I can barely qualify for Davis or even Irvine. Currently (with hopeful predictions), I will have a WEIGHTED GPA of a 3.52. My last PSAT score was a 189. I take SATs in March. I'm NERVOUS!!! Other school's I've been looking into are NYU, Boston University, Syracuse, UOP, and USC. Opinions?

It's still WAY to early to stress or be concerned. You have ONE semester worth of grades, and you'll need four for UCs and five for most other colleges. A 189 psat is excellent for a Soph. USC just loves NMSF's (and gives out automatic tuition discounts), so suggest you prep hard this upcoming summer.

Good luck.

Pay attention and make sure you take all of the required classes! Don't forget visual/performing arts
