Avoiding Thanksgiving Clashes Between Parents and College Kids

S wouldn’t tell me when or how he was coming home except to say that he’d come home Weds. He wanted it to be a surprise.

It was. After taking a late afternoon walk, I came into the house and was immediately puzzled that the alarm I had turned on was off. Then, S jumped out from behind the sofa. I almost fainted. What a wonderful surprise, and so typical of S, who had gotten a ride home with a friend.

Once home, S called friends to try to arrange going to the movies that evening. Everyone but one was busy, so we invited him over. After a nice dinner (thankfully, I had gotten some extra food), they went out and then S returned around 5 a.m. Knowing S, they ended up hanging out at his friend’s house and doing something like playing video games. Since graduating from h.s., S has had no curfew and I don’t worry when he’s out.

Interesting to me that S seems to have forgotten that in Aug. after I said he could go off to college even though he hadn’t finished cleaning his room, he had promised to paint his room on his return. Hmmmmm…

But it’s really nice having S home.

Now off to the 3 Thanksgiving gatherings that we’re invited to. Not bad considering we’ve no family in this area.

Wishing all a wonderful day filled with love and appreciation.

I must have the world’s most boring family.

D brought home a suitcase filled full of textbooks and has been doing readings for her psych class all day. S helped H rake leaves this morning and will probably watch multiple football games in order to procrastinate about his studying this afternoon.

For tomorrow and Saturday, I have been informed that they wish to borrow my car to shop for fascinating things such as underwear.

They were just as dull in high school.

Yawn.

Northstarmom – my daughter left with an unclean room too. She took a stab at it during her break, but it is still a mess. Maybe at Christmas she’ll finish the job?

Marian – Raking leaves. Ah, waxing nostalgic. Brings back memories of fall in South Dakota. No raking leaves off our ittly bitty Bay area yard. . . Then again, no shoveling snow neither . . .

S didn’t join us for Thanksgiving as he is studying in Canada and their Thanksgiving break was in early October. We felt bad about his being in class, alone, etc, but had some good news this afternoon. An American dorm-mate has relatives in town and S was invited for dinner. H and I are very thankful for that!
