Awards In HS

If there is an awards night for athletics, or academics and a student did something to cause a 5 day+ out of school suspension that school year, would that student be publicly be recognized for an award? Would that student not be recognized on the podium, but be listed in a program (for example as a participant in a sport)? I am just curious as to how this is typically handled.

I’m believe that at our school, if the awards night is during the actual 5-day suspension, the student would not be allowed to attend; but I’m pretty sure that the student’s name would still be announced. Anything else would give rise to speculation, and by implication make the suspension fact public, when it is in fact private. (I think?)

In this case, the suspension was not during the awards night. Chocoholic, are you saying that the student’s name would be mentioned for academic awards or sports awards? Would the student get their recognition on the podium like all other students who did not have disciplinary records if the suspension was not during the award evening?

I’m not sure how it’s typically handled, but if the student earned an award, why would the student not be recognized for their accomplishment? Like chocoholic, if the suspension is during the Awards Night I could see not allowing the student to attend, since suspension is supposed to mean that you can’t enter school grounds. Other than that, I don’t see why they would be excluded.

Yes, NEM, that is what I am saying; the student would get recognition on the podium. Their name would be announced regardless of whether the suspension was during awards evening; and in fact be allowed to come up and receive the award if the suspension was not in effect the day of the awards.

The accomplishment did happen, and the student deserves recognition.

I would definitely call the school and ask to see this kind of policy in writing, so its not something arbitrary.

Well in this example, the cause for the suspension impacted other students because privileges were taken away (understandable cold feet on the part of school administrators/staff). I don’t want to go into details on a public forum. If someone does something, whether it is cheating, destroying school property, stealing from a school, using illegal drugs at school, damaging a teacher’s car, climbing the roof of the school, starting a fire near the school, etc. do you think that they should be recognized as at an award’s evening? Oh and in this case, the behavior became a public matter because some students witnessed the event, and students were told privileges were going to be taken away and the reason why.

Chocoholic, I cross posted with you. I don’t need to call the school bc it has nothing to do with my child. I was just wondering how other schools handle the issue.

At our school, if a student receives an unsatisfactory citizenship mark on his/her transcript (which would happen with most of your examples in #6), then the student would not be eligible to receive any academic awards given by the school. They are removed from the pool of candidates being considered for the award.
