H and I have decided to go to Ann Arbor for a getaway weekend later this month. Haven’t been to Ann Arbor in years. Need B&B suggestions, and restaurant and touring suggestions would be appreciated too. We love just walking around college campuses and soaking up the atmosphere!

Pizzagirl, I can’t help you with B&B’s because we live close enough to not have to stay over, but for restaurants I would recommend Slurping Turtle, Mani Osteria, Aventura and Isalita. Have been to all in the past year and they are all fun, great food, fun atmospheres. Have fun!

What do you enjoy eating - or your husband - cause I remember you saying you don’t get that excited about food!!!
Zingermans of course - for lunch or even just a slice of their hummingbird cake!!! Or the Zingerman Roadhouse. Kerrytown - still a good Farmer’s Market (not Just food) on Saturdays. Like old treasure hunting- TreasureMart! Enjoy nature? The U of M botanical gardens - http://www.lsa.umich.edu/mbg/

Have you checked Airbnb???

No seafood (allergies) but certainly up for ethnic foods of any sort.

This really is a pretty legit list - the pesto fries??? OMG!!! <a href=“23 Reasons Ann Arbor Is The Best Food Town In All The Land”>23 Reasons Ann Arbor Is The Best Food Town In All The Land;

Try Air bnb. Lots of my friends have used it and have found great places to stay. I tried to use it on a recent trip but couldn’t find anything that really worked for us.

I’ve never been to Ann Arbor, but I like using the tripadvisor site when I’m planning a trip.
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g29556-c2-Ann_Arbor_Michigan-Hotels.html

I like lunch at the “real” Zingerman’s in town, but I just ate at the Roadhouse and found it overpriced and not nearly as interesting or good as the real thing. Leave time to find parking near the ‘real’ one, and a weekday is probably better than a weekend, but it is worth the trip!

Are you allergic to all seafood or just shellfish?

Some of my favorite restaurants (both around campus and far off campus) were:
TMAZ Taqueria (Mexican)
Izzy’s (Phillysteaks - they have a few other things but if you go get a Phillysteak)
Chia Shiang (Chinese)
Rich JC (Korean - only has bar style seating though so watch out, peak times may have no seats)
Ari Rang (Korean)
Seoul Street (Like Korean/American Fusion kind of food, I think the idea is it’s like Korean street food or something).
Rod’s Place (Korean - Just get BiBimBop if you go there, that’s his main thing. Also sells frozen yoghurt)

Zingerman’s is overpriced and nothing special, don’t bother with it IMO. I know it’s the iconic Ann Arbor restaurant but it’s just not anything special.

Looking at locations for B&B’s, the ones that stand out are Library Bed & Breakfast, which is behind the law school - go to Dominick’s to hang out with law students and drink out of mason jars - and Burnt Toast Inn, which is near Main Street. The former is basically in the campus, while the latter is downtown. They’re not far apart but I wouldn’t want to stay further away.

As to things to see, I’d spend my time walking around. The biggest attractions are probably the football stadium and the Diag, the big crossing area through campus, meaning it’s really college town. It matters more to me, perhaps, because I lived in Ann Arbor (and went to law school there) but also because I like the architecture and Albert Kahn’s work at U of M stands out. I lived near the Nickels Arcade, which is very like the Burlington Arcade in London, and would go to the Michigan Theatre all the time. I started going to Zingerman’s when they used to sell ends of bread for 5 cents apiece and they had a “Goldberg’s” sign around because that was the name they wanted but it was taken. But I’m being nostalgic. Ah youth.

Not a B&B but you might try the Inn at the League - right on campus and convenient to downtown and museums.

Thanks. I know how to use Tripadvisor - I wanted to hear your recommendations! Appreciate it. And yeah, I can live without Zingermans.

If you go to Zingerman’s, you’re within walking distance of Kerrytown (farmer’s market +cute shops) and Treasure Mart (if you like to browse old collectibles, furniture, etc.). Zingerman’s is not cheap, but a reuben or other specialty sandwich really is quite good, bakery items/cheeses - amazing selection.

If you are there (and again, enjoy old things) Oct 18-19, the Ann Arbor Antiques Market is going on <a href=“Ann Arbor Antiques Market”>Ann Arbor Antiques Market;

You could also be among the first to try the new location of Krazy Jim’s Blimpy Burger - a U of M quintessential greasy, but delicious burger!!! http://www.blimpyburger.com/

We will be there the weekend of Oct 25.

Another suggestion (sorry, I LOVE Ann Arbor and we use it a lot for recreation!!!) if it’s a good weather weekend: kayaking/canoeing - rent everything right at the site: <a href=“Canoe, Kayak and Tube”>http://www.a2gov.org/departments/Parks-Recreation/play/Pages/Canoeing.aspx

^^ Oohhh, October 25th - the U of M/ MSU football game! Luckily the game is in East Lansing that weekend, but I’m guessing you could bump into some drunk unhappy Wolverine fans on Saturday.

Gratzi and Nichols Arboretum
